Sustainable Development
The term sustainable development was introduced in the 1987 report "Our Common Future". The World Commission on Environment and Development defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Different communities are organizing themselves to promote this ideology. They are combating the pressure of corporations’ economic practices, which damage the environment and living conditions.
Corporations are taking over community farms. This is degrading the land due to the harsh agricultural processes used for mass production. The use of chemicals, found in pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides causes strain on the land. The meat industry is one of those corporations responsible for soil erosion and land destruction. McDonalds and Burger King use lethal poisons to destroy vast areas of Central American rainforest, to create grazing pastures for cattle, to be sent back to the states as burgers and pet food, and to provide fast food packaging materials. It takes 800 square miles of forest just to keep them supplied with paper for one year. In an interview in the meat production plant in Costa Rica, it was found that Montecillos Cooperative produces 20 to 24 tons of meat for hamburgers per month to export to fast-food restaurants in United States. Among other environmental and social problems is land use management. In Mozambique, for a family to own a small piece of land is a great privilege. Over 80 percent of Mozambique’s 17 million people are peasants whose survival depends on the food they grow. In the 1990’s a peace treaty was sign...

...tional ways to work with the land and to re-establish our lost connection with nature as in the Andean region example. These changes and visions for a sustainable future are happening in every part of the world. The goal of sustainable development is to create a sense of responsibility towards other humans and nature and to promote the awareness that we only have a limited amount of resources, which need to be properly distributed. The most important aspect of sustainability is taking action in reflecting these ideas.

The following case study critiques Upton’s vision to establish a sustainable community through implementing comprehensive sustainable strategy. The urban periphery development is thought to demonstrate superior execution of sustainable principles in development (Jackson 2007). As a parallel, the report focuses on the development of Upton’s design code and demonstrates how large -scale mix-use developments can incorporate sustainable practice and principles of urban growth.
When the boys arrive at the island after a plane crash, they are forced to find a way to keep everything in order and under control. “At first they delight in their freedom and in their pleasure of the island”( Saidi, Hasan1). Then the boys begin to explore, Ralph and Piggy find a conch shell on the beach. When Ralph and Piggy first see the shell Piggy says "S'right. It's a shell! I seen one like that before. On someone's back wall. A conch he called it. He used to blow it and then his mum would come. It's ever so valuable--" (Golding15). They use this shell as a symbol of how fragile order and democracy is. The sound from the shell gathers all the boys together after the plane crash. The plane crash seperated them in th...
Traditionally, conch shells are used to create trumpeting sounds when blown into correctly. However, in The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, their found conch shell turns into so much more than just a call or sound. From the beginning of the novel, the conch is shown in many strong ways and affects each character differently. Mainly Jack, Ralph, and Piggy each change because of what the conch symbolizes to the boys. The symbol of the conch shell impacts different aspects of Ralph, Jack and Piggy including; power, importance, envy, and downfall. Piggy is influenced by the impact of the conch on Ralph and grows to be more confident in feeling more important with the conch by his side. Ralph was able to line his own leadership power by making the conch such an important object on the island, and Jack while once wanting all the
In the beginning of the novel Ralph and Piggy found the conch on the beach. In the book the conch represents civilization and leadership. Piggy said “ We can use the conch and blow it to call everyone together” (William Golding). In the story they use the shell to assemble everyone together and have a
Henry Adams, an American historian, once said, “Chaos was the law of nature; Order was the dream of man.” Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding, shows how order is established until the evil nature of mankind seeps through. In this story, parents send their sons away on a plane in order to escape World War II. However, the plane crashes and leaves them stranded on a deserted island. From there, the boys have to learn how to take care of themselves and create rules revolving around a conch. This shell represents how fragile order and democracy can be. If one follows the conch throughout the story, he or she can see that it symbolizes civilizing forces, such as democracy, law, and order. The more the boys disregard it or mistreat it, the more uncivilized they become.
William Golding develops numerous symbols in Lord of the Flies, some of which include the conch shell, the fire, and Piggy’s glasses. Each of these symbols presents a key element to the story and represents something far greater than its plain, physical being. For instance the conch shell, which was presented to the characters early on in the story and lasted until nearly the end, seemed to represent the civilization and order of the island. The first action the conch is used for is to call an assembly and to find out if there are others or if they are alone on this island, this occurs on page sixteen where it is said “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—.” Forever after this initial usage, the
9. Smith’s report defines sustainable development as, “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Smith’s definition is important to consider, because it illustrates that that we do not have to destroy the natural environment to have economic progress.
“The savage in man is never quite eradicated.” These are the words of Henry David Thoreau. They are undoubtedly pertinent to Lord of the Flies by William Goulding. The acclaimed novel tells the story of a group of English boys stranded on an island after an unfortunate plane crash. The first two characters that are introduced are Ralph and Piggy, the main protagonists. The two boys find a conch shell in the lagoon of the island. Because they are alone on the island, the boys are forced to establish a makeshift society as they await rescue. The conch soon becomes an important symbol and means of maintaining order. If we follow the conch throughout the story, we can see that it symbolizes and channels precious civilizing forces, such as democracy,

Sustainability is the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld or confirmed. According to UN (2014), “sustainability is the procedure of development which assists the future generation ability to meet their needs with present needs. The utmost practice of sustainability is in relation to sustainability development. Sustainable development is a forming standard for human life on a determinate world (d.n, 2014).
Sustainability is an issue that everyone should be concerned about. If the planet Earth is going to exist, as we know it, everyone should wake up and do their part to help achieve a greater level of sustainability. In my English 101 class we learned about the issue of sustainability. Many different topics were discussed and researched throughout the course of the semester. Overall, I think that the sustainability project has been a learning and enlightening experience for everyone in this class. Many more things can be done next semester, since the groundwork has been laid to continue this project for time to come.
Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions – a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. Presumably to avoid noodling over a terminology or to avoid the confrontation with a definition, most widely the concept is broken down a planning process (c.f. e.g. Döring & Muraca, 2010). That is why most common sustainability is understood as sustainable development.1
O’Brien, Susie; Szeman, Imre Excerpt from: Popular Culture: A User’s Guide, Second Edition, pp. 67-99.
In class we discussed what sustainable development meant to us; each group had its own definition. Our group’s definition was that sustainable development is for the long term for future generations, for the basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and job. The basic will increase over time and our resources will diminish, which why sustainable development is important. Sustainable development is important for future generations so that they end up with a world better than ours. Sustainable development is achievable if society works together to meet everyone’s basic needs and create a better world.
Sustainable development means that the present generations should be able to make use of resources to live better lives in such a manner that it doesn’t compromise the ability of future generations to survive and make better lives for themselves as well. For sustainable development to occur, there needs to be sustainable economic, ecological and community development. Society needs to be educated about ways in which they can use resources, especially natural, in such a manner that it doesn’t cause harm to the environment and put future generations lives at risk.
