What keeps you hooked to a story something that keeps you guessing?This question is examined in many extents throughout the short story. As the author leaves you curious on what will happen next. This overall sense of suspense is magnified throughout the text. In the Short story “The Interlopers”. The author Saki uses several different elements that combine to create the suspense.
His use of the setting, dialogue, and plot creates an effective use of surprise.
Saki’s in-depth description of the setting contributes to the suspense of the story.

The suspense of what is going to happen leaves you guessing.The background created by the plot ties into the advancement of suspense in the story. “The disposed party had never acquainted in the judgment of the courts”. This tells the reader there is still some unresolved tension between the two. Another question that leads the reader how will they act because of this prerequisite tension. The suspense in the story was created like a pyramid having 3 layers. The foundation was created by the expert detailing of the setting which makes the reader feel involved. The middle layer was made the dialogue of the characters which accelerated the suspense of the text. The last piece of the suspense of the story the top of the pyramid was created by, the plot the way in which the author uses the suspense in the story and emotion to create a feeling of uncertainty.
