Three years prior to when the story takes place, a young woman named Regina Clausen disappeared on a cruise ship called the Gabrielle. Susan Chandler, the hostess of a daily talk show, took interest in the topic of lonely women disappearing on cruise ships. Specifically, the Regina Clausen case caught her attention. She finds out that Regina Clausen was given a turquoise ring on the cruise, with the words ‘You Belong to Me’ engraved on it. Susan then receives a call during the show from a woman named Carolyn who was given an identical ring. Carolyn is then hit by a bus and is in a coma. One woman named Hilda Johnson said that she witness Carolyn being pushed into that bus, and that it was an attempt to murder her. Not long after, Hilda is murdered. Finally, a woman named Tiffany calls Dr. Chandler’s show and talks about how her boyfriend gave her a similar ring. However, it was said that the ring Tiffany received would be the cause of her death. This was an accurate prediction, as Tiffany was stabbed to death. Plain Truth and Sing You Home are novels both written by Jodi Picoult. They both have plots involving religion and how it strongly affects characters and the court cases they are subjected to. Religion is a topic addressed in the book in both positive and negative light, the religions exposed; Amish and Evangelical are shown to be extremist. The positive lighting can be seen in some of the characters and their innocence such a Katie (Plain Truth) and Liddy (Sing You Home). The negative is spread across the pages, with murder trials and anti-homosexual preaching’s.
In the novel, Beauty by Robin Mc Kinley, the family of a wealthy merchant looses their wealth when the shipment boats get lost at sea. There are three daughters named Hope, Grace, and Honour, whom is nicknamed Beauty, and a father. The family is forced to move to the country and start a life more modest than accustomed. After the family adapts to country life, one of the older sisters gets married to an iron worker who used to work at the shipyard owned by the father. They have babies. Life goes on in the country.

In the short story titled "Shiloh", Bobbie Ann Mason does an extremely effective job of getting her message across. This story is about a couple that gets married a young age that probably was not ready to be married. They experience a series of events, which shape them and determined there future. The author in this story does a fabulous job because this story was easy to read and understand. "Shiloh" was written in 1982 so the story plot isn't old and hard to grasp. It is set in recent times and features common people. Mason presents problems that people can relate to and identify with. She shows that staying in comfortable situations isn't always the best thing to do; sometimes you should go out of your shell and experience some kind of growth or change.
For as long as man has walked the earth, so has evil. There may be conflicting moral beliefs in this world, but one thing is universally considered wrong: serial killers. Although some people may try to use insanity as an explanation for these wicked people, they cannot explain away the heartlessness that resides in them. As shown in The Stranger Beside Me, infamous serial killer Ted Bundy is no exception to this. Even though books about true crimes may be considered insensitive to those involved, the commonly positively reviewed book The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule handles the somber issue of Ted Bundy’s emotionally destructive early life and the brutal crimes he committed that made people more fearful and aware of the evil that can exist in seemingly normal people well.
The setting in the short story “Shiloh” by Bobbie Ann Mason works well to accentuate the theme of the story. The theme portrayed by Mason is that most people change along with their environment, with the exception of the few who are unwilling to adapt making it difficult for things such as marriage to work out successfully. These difficulties are apparent in Norma Jean and Leroy’s marriage. As Norma Jean advances herself, their marriage ultimately collapses due to Leroy’s unwillingness to adapt with her and the changing environment.
In the poem “The One Girl at the Boys’ Party,” Sharon Olds uses imagery to convey pride in her daughter’s growing femininity. What would seem to be another childhood pool party for the girl turns into an event that marks a rite of passage to adulthood. Though the narrator is reluctant of her daughter’s search for an identity, she ultimately sees her daughter’s transformation to womanhood as admirable. Olds’ pride is first shown when the girl begins to lose her innocence from the unfamiliar surroundings of masculine men. The narrator says, “They will strip to their suits, her body hard and indivisible as a prime number” (5-6). This statement leads me to believe that he knew what type of woman that she was.
The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
