Everyone has some one that they looked up to as they grew up. For many it is a favorite actor, singer, action hero, or princess that wins the prize of being the object of the statement “I want to be just like them when I grow up”. Many parents do not see the possible harm that could arise when a child makes this seemingly trivial, yet very influential decision, but photographer Jamie C. Moore did. Moore saw the value that role models have on a child and she and her daughter, Emma, took pictures of Emma modeled after history’s most influential women for Emma’s 5 year old birthday photographs. The concept of a role model is very easy for children to understand because children learn through imitation and example. Having a role model is a clear way to have a person physically visualize the type of person that they, in this case, want to grow up to be. Many children have role models and deciding from a young age someone that one looks up to is very important. By acknowledging that another person has qualities and characteristics that one themselves wants to possess is a suitable way to set goals. A substantial role model is someone who has the qualities and characteristics of a person that someone should admire. Some examples of substantial role models, which are also women that Moore did a similar photographs using her daughter as a model for, are Jane Goodall, Amelia Earhart, Hellen Keller, Coco Channel, and of course Susan B. Anthony. These women are substantial role models because of their innovative viewpoints and highly significant accomplishments in their fields. For children, especially girls, to grown into happy and highly successful adults, they need to learn from example, which is what substantial role models can give them. While role models are a crucial part of a child’s upbringing, the type of individual chosen as a role model is incredibly significant as well. The problem that arises when choosing a role model is this: if the characteristics of a person’s role model that they want to possess are negative or unhealthy this can encourage those same behaviors in the observer. A child, who does not realize that wanting to be like Cinderella, a girl who is tall, blonde, skinny, and beautiful, but chose to marry a man who could not remember her face, is somewhat of an issue. Children watch cartoon movies, like Cinderella, and do not realize the effect that those types of movies have on them. Many children are not exposed to
