The Extraordinary Leader: Susan B. Anthony If asked to name one person involved in the fight for social equalities would Susan B. Anthony come to mind? Susan’s passion for social reform began on her family farm in Adams, Massachusetts. On the fifteenth of February in 1820, Susan Brownell Anthony was born to a local cotton mill owner and his wife. She was the second eldest of eight children born to the Quaker family. It was in this Quaker family were her passion for equal rights grew. In the Quaker religion women are treated equal to men before God. According to Sara Ann McGill (2017) author of “Susan B. Anthony was an exemplary example of the leadership practice Model the Way. According to James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner (2011) authors of “The Leadership Challenge Workshop,” Model the Way means to find ones voice and lead by example (p. 10). Susan B. Anthony found her voice growing up in a Quaker community, where women were treated equal to men. Later she would partner with Elizabeth Stanton in the fight for equal rights for women. According to Grace Farrell (2006) author of “Beneath the Suffrage Narrative” in 1869, “Stanton and Anthony formed the New Your-based National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA), the purpose of which was to secure a Constitutional amendment that would give women the vote” (p. 3).
