If a murderer was given a different punishment other than the death penalty, the human live(s) that perished would become less and less important. The death penalty is justified because in the Pledge of Allegiance we state “Liberty and Justice for all”. What better way to show this than to give deserving criminals the right punishment? (Phil 2) The Death Penalty has positive effects on murder victim’s families. Losing a loved one from old age, or sickness is a time of suffering that almost everyone will experience, but losing a loved one because they were brutally murdered is unexpected and much harder to overcome.
The death penalty is very controversial nationwide. However, we believe the death penalty is the only way to deter crime. Unlike the lethal injection, electrocution, firing squad, and gas chamber, hanging is more painful; therefore, using hanging as a death penalty puts more fear into murderers (Death Penalty Information Center). “Although you will never deter all murderers, the effect of deterrence will rise as the probability of executions rise” (Sharp “Death Penalty Paper”). Whenever death penalties are used as a punishment, the percentage of murders committed declines.

Crimes are becoming more common in our country. Many more prisoners are being sent to jail every day. The punishments for those who commit major crimes like murder and such could be life sentenced in jail or put on death row. There may be benefits to allowing the death penalty, but, in my opinion, the disadvantages by far outweigh them. Although the death penalty is a reasonable punishment, I am against it because it is another form of murder, which is a cruel act.
Additionally, according to Amnesty International “‘the death penalty legitimizes an irreversible act of violence by the state and will inevitably claim innocent victims.”’(“Capital Punishment”). Also, the decision is too final, it does not allow the chance for the convicted to be proven innocent, and that... ... middle of paper ... ... the death penalty deters crime more effectively than long terms of imprisonment. States that have death penalty laws do not have lower crime rates or murder rates than states without such laws”’ (“Top Ten”). The death penalty has been around for many years, yet there has been no real impact on crime rates. In fact, states with the death penalty have a higher murder rate than those without (“Capital Punishment”).
