A funeral is a place where family and friends can gather to show support for one another and say a last goodbye to the deceased. The support that is offered at a funeral goes a long way for the grieving. Just the simple act of sharing that grief decreases the intensity of it. There are plenty of people at a funeral that will offer sympathetic words, hugs, and encouragement to each other. Somethings we can say to a loved one in their time of need is as follows: “there are no words to tell you how sorry I am. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.”, “I am so sad to hear about your loss. Dealing with someone dying is not something that is going to be fun or enjoyable. Death comes to everyone, none of us can duck and dodge it. Death of natural causes is not something that can be controlled by anyone, but it is important for people to be with those that are dying. When someone you know is dying, whether they are friends or family it’s very important for them to feel loved and not alone. It is also important that the opinions and thoughts of the patient be taken into consideration because they are going through something that no one can say they relate to. I’m glad we have Maurice, my mother’s younger brother here today. Ella, her older sister, unfortunately couldn’t make it, but I know the news of my mothers death hit her hard. And I know that she prayed with all her will, for my mother.
What is Grief? Merriam-Webster ‘s online dictionary defines grief as, “deep sadness caused by someone’s death; a deep sadness; and/or a trouble or annoyance”(n.d.). This term may have a different way of impacting one’s life depending on geographical location; culture plays an important role in how those that experiences a loss or hardship, cope with grief. After further research, a closer look will be taken at the five stages associated with grief and loss, how Hindu and Islamic Muslim culture deal with death, and how cultural differences may impact the stages of grief.

People wish for one more chance to just see their loved one one more time. Death is a hard thing to cope with and people hope for one more chance to get to see and talk to their loved one. One more chance to seeing their glowing smile. One more chance to talk to them and tell them you love them. Just one more chance to give that person that was so dear in a life, just one more hug. People who have been through death realize that the want and need of one more chance to see them because they are gone form the word. The person they held so close to them is gone and there is no getting the loved one back. In the past, when a person died no one asked, ¡§When should we schedule the funeral?¡¨ or ¡§How much would you like to spend on a casket?¡¨ Members of the community simply appeared and began preparing the body for burial and the mourners would provide comfort to the bereaved. Death itself has become something of a stranger because it used to be that death was an everyday occurrence of life, for example people did not live as long, higher infant mortality rates, etc. People usually died at home, surrounded by loved ones. ¡§Funerals, like weddings, were not invitational events, but community-wide gatherings. But today, it is possible to reach the age of forty without ever attending a funeral or visiting a house of mourning.
Life happens, and so does death as it is also a part of life. Moreover, in many cases, some of us will have to go through the experience of anticipating death in ourselves or in a loved one as opposed to a sudden death in the family. In other words, both the family and the person involved start to grieve, even before the parting actually takes place.
While reviewing "The Funeral" the first thing that became apparent was the title. A funeral is ceremony held in connection with the burial of a dead person. So already just by looking at the title we become aware that we are dealing with a dead body. Death, in some cultures, is the separation of the body from the soul. The soul continues to live and may even find shelter in another body.
A funeral is an important event that should be planned with careful consideration, as each person only gets one to celebrate his or her life. People often die expectantly and suddenly leaving any funeral and burial arrangements in the hands of friends or relatives. These friends or family of the deceased may or may not have a good understanding of what the deceased would have preferred in his or her post death arrangements. A person planning his or her own funeral can prevent this guessing game and insure the arrangements are to their specifications.
Grieving is the outward expression of your loss. Every individual grief is likely to be expressed physically, emotionally, and psychologically. For instance, crying is a physical expression, while depression is a psychological expression. It is very important to allow the client to express these feelings. People cope with the loss of a loved one in many ways. For some, the experience may lead to personal growth, even though it is a difficult and trying time. There is no right way of coping with death. The way a person grieves depends on the personality of that person and the relationship with the person who has died. How a person copes with grief is affected by the person's cultural and religious background, coping skills, mental history, support systems, and the person's social and financial status.

The funeral and wake were especially difficult because of having to stand in the greeting line. Having to greet everyone is truly annoying. This is especially true when you don’t know who most of the people are, and when you yourself are under emotional duress. That point aside, it was very interesting to see the reactions of the different people. One thing I noticed was the conversations between my father’s cousins.
