I believe that the progression of new media does in fact mean that society in undergoing a form of democratization. Since new media means the ability to have on-demand communication and the ability to contact anyone, anywhere at anytime, this indeed will naturally cause democratization. The definition of democratization is to essentially, hear the public’s needs and have them speak for themselves. I have come up with three points that will illustrate how we will soon progress to becoming an entirely democratic society if we continue with new media in our everyday lives. We now have the ability to speak to anyone at anytime, we have lost our “face” but not our voice and we essentially answers to ourselves not others. These three points are what are causing our society to move into the direction of democratization.

The People's Party, also known as the "Populists", was a short-lived political party in the United States established in 1891 during the Populist movement. It was most important in 1892-96, and then rapidly faded away. Based among poor, white cotton farmers in the South and hard-pressed wheat farmers in the plain states, it represented a radical crusading form of agrarianism and hostility to banks, railroads, and elites generally. Americans were not aware of the division among populists and progressivists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries yet they were aware of the division between Democrats and Republicans. Populism referred to a particular political style, which expressed alienation and aggression and tend to hate Wall Street and bank interests. Progressivism was a movement of the college-educated urban middle class, which valued expertise and efficiency and favored government regulation and foreign affairs.
To discover the correlation between populism and authoritarianism (against liberal democracy), two points need to be discussed: 1) the institutional settings under populist regime, and 2) how populist institutions are correlated with authoritarianism, instead of democracy. Based on Berlin’s understanding of populism as a political means to sustain positive liberty, Riker further distinguishes the populist and liberal democracy as two forms of democracy, and points out the ineradicable correlations between populist democracy and authoritarianism, while liberal democracy may not survive in populist regime. In Riker’s context, the profound difference between populist democracy and liberal democracy is the interpretation of voting.

As the times change, so does the latest technology. In the mid-1900's it was the television, before that the radio, and now in the late-20th and 21st century we have the internet. With the coming of every new media outlet audiences and media moguls migrate. Along with the migrations are the politicians who try to use the new form of media to more easily reach the public. It's come to the point where the internet increasingly work with democracy directly; some elections in the United States even going so far as to hold online polling in a general election. "Online voting is increasingly making its way int our political process," writes Vote.com President Dick Morris, "the 2000 Arizona Democratic Primary tallied 39,942 online votes," (Morris 1034). However, should the internet really be used to such degrees in the case of democracy? There is an ongoing debate among scholars on the topic. One thing to consider is whether or not the many accusations stating that the internet is an aid to terrorism outweigh the positive effects of how the internet has strengthened democracy and has had a crucial part in turning oppressed nations into less oppressed, democratic states. On the subject of terrorism being aided by the internet, making it easier for terrorist factions leaders to inform their people, could it not be argued that these factions leaders could use other means of communication, maybe only a little less effectively and therefore nullifying the accusation that the internet is the culprit? After extensive research, it's clear that the internet does not harm democracy; on the contrary, the internet strengthens it in a way that no other form of media has done before.

Social media has played an increasing and larger part in today's government. Social media has the power to influence elections and connect the people to the policy makers in new ways.

Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology.
