Criterion D Summative Assessment
Severe weather can be dangerous and unpredictable. You are an engineer that
has been asked to submit a report to the local township describing how science
can be used to keep people safe. Choose one type of severe weather. Research
how science is being used to protect people and/or property from damage as well
as the limitations of how science can protect people from a severe weather event.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, a tornado is a rotating column of air accompanied by a funnel shaped downward extension of a cumulonimbus cloud and having a vortex several hundred yards in diameter whirling destructively at speeds of up to three hundred miles per hour. There are six classifications of tornadoes, which are measured on what is known as the Fujita Scale. These tornadoes range from an F0 to an F5, which is the most devastating of all. Abnormal warm, humid, and oppressive weather usually precede the formation of a tornado. Records of American tornadoes date back to 1804 and have been known to occur in every state of the United States.
The painting Ocean Awe by Joan Nix in the Holly Buddy Center represents a calming and peaceful place to be. Through the uses of Nix’s type of painting, elements, and principles of art, he is able to bring out positive emotions and past memories in his artwork.
Do you know that people are polluting oceans in so many ways, and what we are doing about it. First, my evidence shows that two billion people within thirty miles of the coast create 100 million metric tons of coastal plastic waste (Doc.1). In my own words, this evidence show that all this pollution is really harmful to ocean creatures and us. More evidence is that the North Pacific Gyre has collected lots of these pollutants, so it is nicknamed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (O.I.). This shows how we are polluting the oceans. My next evidence shows that a Beach Act was passed in 2000 saying the EPA or the Environmental Protection Agency will help states test and monitor coastal water pollution to protect swimmers (Doc.2). October 29th 2012 the high wind destroyer struck the heart of New York. They called her sandy; she was a very devastating hurricane. She demolished more than 300,000 homes and left them homeless, and confirmed 285 deaths. Imagine big strong winds whistling around your home, no power, and a big river down your street with cars bobbing down it, scary, isn’t it. These are some of the tragic events that happened during hurricane sandy. What is a hurricane? The proper definition is, when a series of cold gusty winds mix with the warm humid air. It’s just like a tornado but it forms over water.
Technology was a lacking factor on that January 12th day of 1888, which did not give those people warning on what was coming their way. Forecasters that were subject to human error did not have access to information that could have been provided by the Army. Certain weather terminology was forbidding to use for the fear that some cities were immune to these storms. During that day of the blizzard there were no advanced warning signs (outside of the temperature dropping) that the worst blizzard was about to occur, technology had not yet reached that point. If on that day or any day, the Army would have made weather a top priority some of those children could have been saved or at home with their families instead of dying alone in the snow. Forecasters could only get weather information the day of or twenty-four hours before. Many of the weather disasters were not accurate, so if there were any weather predictions good or bad, the people had no choice to believe it. Both parties really did not know any more than the
Half of the United States population traveled out side of the borders in 2012. Ten present of the population traveled to the Carrabin in 2012 (United States). Traveling is a way of life for some and a major influence on the United States culture. Despite the recent recession traveling has increased in popularity among Americans. Some believe the increase in popularity for traveling is a result of global climate change. Global climate change refers to the natural change in global temperatures over time. The term global warming, though common, is a misnomer, for under some scenarios it is possible that part of the earth could cool, even as most of the planet gets warmer (Frodeman). In the media, climate change is often interchanged with the words 'global warming'. This is a mincing of words. The two are different. If you combine the two, you get this: Global warming is human-induced climate change. The fact is that climate change can and does occur all the time, and global warming is just a theory.

The article, An Ocean Mystery in the Trillions by William J. Broadjune is about information regarding a family of fish named bristle mouths. Divers have discovered the existence of this family of fish as early as 1872, living in deep ocean depths during a sea expedition. The author discusses their unique characteristics such as its ability to change its gender, “bristle like teeth”, and a strategy called counter-illumination that they use to protect themselves from predators. All the fish’s features are essential to their survival from both predators and the environment. Furthermore, there is a large amount of evidence supporting the fact that it is the most found vertebrate on the planet with a possible population of thousands of trillions. Many sea expeditions over the years have been able to confirm their large population. However, questions were raised when scientists solved the mystery of the Deep Scattering Layer during the Cold War for military purposes. Oceans are such so vast that people underestimate the impact their actions —seeming so insignificant— have on them. Humans have by and large taken the oceans for granted; not considering how important a healthy ocean is to our survival. A popular mind-set is that the oceans are a bottomless supply of fish, natural resources, and an infinite waste dump. There are myriad reasons why the oceans should be saved and the most obvious one is marine life. With 71% of the Earth being covered by water, it is obvious that sea creatures are predominant form of life, making up 80% of the species of life on Earth. However, as important as marine life is, that is not the only reason why saving the oceans is crucial. The ocean floor provides natural resources such as, oil, natural gas, petroleum, minerals, medications, and ingredients for foods and products. The economic benefits of the oceans are huge and significant, as well. Fishing and fish products have provided employment to 38 million people and have generated about $124 billion in economic benefits. However, oceans are on the verge of crisis, marine life, natural resources, transportation, the economy, and important ingredients are at risk due to overfishing, pollution, and acidification. Thus, in this essay I will argue that, oceans are not impervious to human activity and threatening the health of the ocean threatens the health of humanity, since oceans key to our survival.
The bill of lading under a charterparty is just a certificate of receipt for the charterer, the bill of lading is not to be seen as a contract of carriage of goods by sea due to the relationship between the shipowner and charterer under a charterparty. When the bill of lading issued by the shipowner is transferred to a third party by the charterer, the right-obligation relationship between the shipowner and the bill of lading indorsee will be effected by the international conventions that related to the bill of lading. And that means the terms governing the relationship between the shipowner and a bill of lading indorsee will be different from the terms originally agreed with the charterer, the shipowner will exposed to greater liability than he initially anticipated. Obviously, the shipowner does not want to see that happen. Under this circumstance, the shipowner always wonder that the terms of the charterparty can be carried through into the terms of bill of lading contracts. So whether it is a charterparty or a bill of lading, the liability of the shipowner would always be the same, and that led to the development of incorporation clause.
Hurricane is a natural disaster with far reaching consequences. It takes away the lives of millions of people and causes damage to almost all of human creation. It can cause extensive damage to coastlines and several hundred miles inland due to heavy rainfall. Floods and flying debris often plays havoc in the lives of people living along coastal areas. Slow moving hurricanes produce heavy rains in mountainous regions. Landfall and mud-slides can occur due to excessive rain. Chances of flash floods also brighten due to heavy rainfall. The oceans need to be protected because it is where life began and if not taken care of, life as we know it will end. When dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems are suffer and become endangered along with lives of people and of marine life. Surfrider Foundation recognizes the importance of protecting and preserving the quality and biodiversity of the world's coasts because they are truly irreplaceable. There is also historical evidence of ocean pollution being present in the past, but the problem still lingers today. Heal the Bay discovered that,“Did you know there is a DDT and PCB hot spot off the coast of Palos Verdes? This superfund site (which indicates it's one of the most polluted places in the United States), is left over from a 1930's era chemical plant. Because DDT takes so long to break down in the marine environment, it persists to this day, contaminating certain species of fish. There are also highly polluted sediments in the Long Beach area, a sign of the heavy shipping in the port. Heal the Bay works on developing effective capping and removal plans to keep those toxins from spreading” (Heal the Bay). DDT is still highly concentrated in the South Bay area and still contaminating different species of fish. Even after more than 80 years DDT, a toxic insecticide, is still very concentrated and during upwellings, DDT particles come back up and continue to harm marine life. If humans are careless about what is thrown on the floor or sprayed on lawns, it can lead to disastrous affects when it comes to the condition of the ocean's ecosystems, and can endanger life itself leading to a problem that only we can mend.
