Silas is a voice of wisdom and a mentor to Bod. Bod is also taught by Miss Lupescu, a wolf-woman who teaches Bod some deeply important lessons that end up saving his life. Combined with friends like Liza Hempstock, the graveyard witch, and Scarlett Perkins, Bod’s human friend, Bod’s experiences are very much shaped by his friends and teachers. The Graveyard Book can be compared to the Harry Potter series for its supernatural elements and orphaned protagonist. Bod’s family, like Harry Potter’s, was killed by a murderer who continues to hunt down and search for the member of the family who escaped being killed. While Bod’s biological family never raised him, he has the spirits in the graveyard, a non-traditional family who also serve as his friends and teachers. However, his adventures a created from his own choices, and are hardly influenced by the guidance or suggestion of his parents. Themes of community, friendship, and family abound in this story of growing up and boyhood. The Graveyard Book upturns the traditional idea of home and

This story commences off with a bright, curious and nature-loving 10 year-old boy named Sam Middleton, having recently experienced moving from his old home to New England, where his parents have moved there to receive better business opportunity selling their vast collection of modern, American art to the public. After lying down, attempting to sleep sadly in his new home, he encounters and meets a petit human in a diminutive mouse suit – Jolly Goodfellow, a Sage. The Sage has been on the Earth for countless numbers of years, providing unseen inspiration to humans in pursuit of creative genius and scientific advancement (such as Albert Einstein and Amelia Lockhart), being disguised as mice, so that they can move about freely and are assigned “cases” (humans). Coincidentally, Jolly has a case he needs to attend to: Professor Hawthorne, a professor at the university, the previous owner of the home. Unfortunately, he mysteriously disappeared recently and with the courtesy help of Sam, will try to find him. Together, they overcome the many conflicts from the evil works of Professor Mandrake and his son, Basil who are inquisitive about Hawthorne’s whereabouts and the Fen, who are also small and related to the Sage, only eviler and crueller and whispering words of evil to those who listen. After retrieving the Scared Seal (which Hawthorne hid in the house to ensure no one such as Mandrake could discover it) which had strange, alien-like markings. With another clue, Jolly had to leave for England and say goodbye to Sam to search for Hawthorne and provide inspiration to him – he felt that we may be on to a discovery that could change mankind...forever!
As former members of society and civilization, the surviving boys attempt to replicate the social values taught to them. Ralph is elected the leader of the group to the dismay of Jack, the leader of a boy’s choir, who becomes jealous of Ralph 's power. At first, everything seems well; shelters are made, the little ones are fed, and the optimism for escape is held high. However, as time goes on, the fear of the unknown begins to catch up to the survivors, and the thoughts of rescue are replaced with savagery and the thirst for hunting. Ralph and his intellectual but physically unfit assistant, Piggy, have to stand their ground in order to prevent Jack, his “hunters”, and the fear of the mysterious “beast” from collapsing the foundation of society and civilization that the survivors had worked so hard to
People have and always will enjoy a good read. The success of classics such as William Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet, and The Merchant of Venice validate this. Modern authors are no exception to this ideology. In Manuel Puig’s 1976 hit, Kiss of the Spider Woman, the audience is introduced to two characters that inevitably fall into situations of adventure, romance, and deception. These elements are embedded in human kind’s tales all across the ages. The first of the two protagonists, Molina, is an easy-going, homosexual window dresser. Meanwhile, the second of the two protagonists, Valentin, is a non-homosexual, hot-blooded, political anarchist. These two are polar opposites who, in the wilderness of society, do their best to avoid each other’s presence; but being trapped in a prison cell together doesn’t give too much space for options. As the book’s title suggests, there is Spider, and therefore, there must be prey. The question is who is who?
The main character, Tom Tin, faces hardships and struggles many fourteen year olds do not have to face so early on. His father has mistakenly got himself into trouble and it is up to Tom to save his father and help make his family’s future bright again. Tom has good intentions throughout the novel, but he gets himself into trouble. He turns out to be an unlikely hero after pushing through his doubts and finally triumphing over his mistakes along his journey.

The book starts by Ralph and Piggy meeting in the jungle of a stranded island. They wander to the beach wondering if there is any other kids on the beach. Along with a group of boys is Jack Merridew, the leader of a choir. When the assembly begins, they decide that they want a chief. The kids all believe that the boy with the "conch" should be chief. They also decide that there is no "beastie", which Jack also obsesses about hunting and takes much of his attention. Immidiatly Jack is offended and has something against Ralph, even though he seems to hide his jealosy.
In Charlotte’s Web, Wilbur is thrown into an entirely new situation, away from Fern, and is forced to adapt and make other friends. In Wilbur’s first interaction with Charlotte, he thinks to himself, “But what a gamble friendship is! [...] Wilbur was merely suffering the doubts and fears that often go with finding a new friend” (p. 41). Once more, it appears that White uses the talking animals to mask a broader focus on life itself. Wilbur overcomes various trials in the course of the book, such as finding himself in an unfamiliar situation, and later ultimately facing Charlotte’s untimely death. The ability to adapt is a necessary life skill, and moreover, dealing with the finality of death cannot be avoided and to pretend that it does not exist does children a great disservice. White introduces controversial topics in a book that is geared toward children, though it should remain a classroom because of those controversial elements. Literature in itself is designed to leave an impression on its readers and White leaves a lasting impression on his young readers as they develop an understanding of unfamiliar situations, and later, death
