My topic is the effects vaccinations have on children. I started with the library database to look for any scientific articles on vaccinations. I did not have a specific age group at first. I knew I needed research that was the most recent as science is always developing. I mostly saw articles about vaccinations and the economy, which was not my main focus. Eventually, the search suggested the keyword children, which brought up many articles. I then narrowed my search to focus on if children should receive vaccinations based on articles that I found. I read a medical study on autism from the database. I also used google to find any other research studies that were more recent. However, the study was from 2013 which appeared to be the most recent
There is a war going on against parents that refuse to vaccinate their children. It is coming from the government that makes and enforces laws requiring parents to vaccinate their children, hostile parents of vaccinated children, and doctors that refuse to see unvaccinated children. They are concerned about the potential health risk unvaccinated children pose to the public. These parents aren’t lunatics but are concerned parents that are trying to make the best choice for their children. In fact, these parents aren’t fighting alone; a number of pediatricians and medical experts are apart of this crusade and have taken the lead. They will tell you there is an agenda, “Vaccine manufacturers, health officials, medical doctors, lead authors of important studies, editors of major medical journals, hospital personnel, and even coroners, cooperate to minimize vaccine failings, exaggerate benefits, and avert any negative publicity that might frighten concerned parents, threaten the vaccine program and lower vaccination rates.” 4
The article, “Motivated Rejection of Science” stood out to me because the vast amount of scientific research to back up findings and the vast majority of the population that rejects it. Lewandowsky and Oberauer discuss the prevalence of false beliefs in the general population. They bring up the popular conspiracy theories that have either false or no scientific research, plaguing the minds of many. When the majority of the general population believe in a certain theory – like the vaccines that are ‘linked’ to measles, Autism, mumps, and rubella – the effects can be detrimental. The vaccine craze was felt worldwide and is the best example of misinformation.
An example of evidence based practice would be to find relevant studies for a specific topic area being researched. For example, to find the research paper titled ‘The efficiency of cotton cover gowns in reducing infection in nursing Neutropenic patients,’ the journal in which the article was published in this case, The International Journal of Nursing, would need to be found. Medline, an online database would be one method of finding this. A list of relevant search terms would then need to be researched by using the PICO Framework, this limits the search to only relevant items and ensures that a well built clinical question will then be formulated (Drummond,1998).
“Vaccinations are causing a major upsurge in childhood diseases, adult maladies, and even deadly ailments such as Gulf War Syndrome and Lou Gehrig’s disease” (Blaylock). Every now and then an individual’s doctor calls telling them about the latest vaccine they should receive. The person immediately schedules a time to come in and get it done. But do they even give a second thought about it? Have they ever thought that maybe they do not need another vaccination? Many people have not taken the time to seriously think about the process of immunization. The truth is, there are many dangers that the average person should be unaware of. Rarely do vaccines actually accomplish what the public has been told. In fact, a lot of vaccines contain harmful substances that have been linked to disorders such as autism. The lack of education and dishonesty from doctors are putting people in danger of health problems without even realizing. Many parents feel obligated for their children to get vaccinated because of school, not knowing they have the alternative option of refusing immunization.
The current living situation of the children and family members and their access to health care services including transportation method, health insurance, financial concerns, and other economic constraints.
The Harmful Effects of Vaccines Vaccines are becoming increasingly hazardous for many children and parents are not being informed about the safety of their children. Current reports are linking vaccines to serious life-threatening disorders such as asthma, autism, immune system dysfunction, and mental retardation (Williams). These recent revelations are causing an increasing amount of people to claim religious and medical exemptions from vaccines. From 1999 to 2006, exemptions have more than doubled from 9,722 to 24,919 (Cronin). It is very clear that vaccinations are posing many problems for parents everywhere.
I started my research by logging into the Ebsco database. Young, teacher, and stress were the keywords I first used. These keywords were included in 16 results. I found one article within these 16 results, so I expanded my search by excluding the word young. After I expanded my search there were 2,806 results. I read through some of them and decided if I felt they should be included in my paper. I found one article that had statics that I thought could greatly benefit my paper. After I finished locating sources on Ebsco, I started my search on the ProQuest database. I began by searching for stress in young teachers. This search brought up 73,016 results. Before I began to do my search process, I made a list and wrote down the things I knew, and certain keywords I could use to find my information. Some of my keywords were, how has technology made cosmetology better, how has technology changed the industry, advances in cosmetology with their equipment and cosmetics, new advanced and enhanced things for cosmetology in 2016- 2017, and if they are making an effect on society. Finding my sources for my research paper wasn't a difficult process for me. I began by typing the question, “new technology in the beauty industry” in the Google search bar. I had a lot of different sources appear, that allowed me to have variety of sources that I needed for my paper.
Vaccines against diphtheria, polio, pertussis, measles, mumps and rubella, and more recent additions of hepatitis B and chicken pox, have given humans powerful immune guards to ward off unwelcome sickness. And thanks to state laws that require vaccinations for kids enrolling in kindergarten, the U.S. presently enjoys the highest immunization rate ever at 77%. Yet bubbling beneath these national numbers is the question about vaccine safety. Driven by claims that vaccinations can be associated with autism, increasing number of parents are raising questions about whether vaccines are in fact harmful to children, instead of helpful (Park, 2008).
A vaccination protects you from particular diseases that can make you sick, disabled or even kill you, the vaccine increases your body’s own defense system, the immune system (Phac-aspc.gc.ca, 2014). A vaccine contains a little bit of the disease germ that is either weak or dead (Phac-aspc.gc.ca, 2014). When a person receives a vaccine, the body reacts by making protective substances known as “antibodies”. The antibodies help defend the body by helping to kill off the germs which have entered the body (Health.ny.org, 2014). The illustration on the right shows how this happens. When a germ enters the body it multiplies to cause an infection, vaccines help create immunity by imitating the infection without causing illness (Cdc.gov, 2014).
I learned that it is possible to discuss social issues looking into History of Science and vice-versa, and it matters to me because it means that scientists may not be giving enough attention to the History of Science – I was in my 5th semester of College in Brazil and this is the first time I am really looking into History of Science. More like a continuation of my two last papers than only one paper, I made a review with what I learned previously and this last section. If someone would ask me why, I would say that is because I learned that sometimes we can solve the problems of tomorrow looking right back to the past.
