Resolve Through Sharing® is a program within the Bereavement and Advanced Care Planning Department of Gundersen Health System. RTS began in 1981 delivering bereavement education to healthcare professionals involved in caring for mothers who experience perinatal loss. The most popular offering in the program’s portfolio, is the three day bereavement training conference. Through a co-sponsorship arrangement, RTS partners with requesting healthcare facilities to bring the conference to their location. Through this arrangement, the co-sponsor absorbs some of the overhead costs, thus increasing our revenue potential. The scope statement suggests that moving the conference to a major city will directly address all three challenges. Hosting the conference in a large; major city, offers multiple convenient, less expensive travel options which in turn offer scheduling flexibility. The participant would not require as much work time for travel. This also makes it easier for the healthcare facility to provide coverage for the employee while they attend a two or three day conference. While funding for additional training continues to be a lower priority for healthcare organizations, smaller amounts requested per employee are more attractive when submitted for approval. The theory of hosting this conference on location looks good on paper. However, the considerable increase in overhead costs forces me to quickly pose the question, “Can we afford to take this risk and absorb the extra expense?” In processing answers to that question, I changed my proposal from potentially hosting three conferences on location next year to one. Taking on multiple conferences would be too far outside of the scope of the immediate need that exists. Being introduced to what scope management plans entail, opened my eyes to the level of research and evaluation that would be required before a decision to host the conference on location could be made. The additional time needed for preparation coupled with maintaining the flow of day to day operations, runs the risk of overextending the team’s resource capacity.
