Different Ways of Life The book Wild Swans by Jung Chang takes place in the 20th century, in China. In this novel we are introduced to three-generations, Wild Swan, her mother, and her grandmother’s journey through an ever-changing China. Women in China at this time were considered weak, but as the war goes on, the reader gets a taste of each individual woman and what they were like, making the story even more interesting because today we have no clue what it was like to live in China during this war. In Wild Swans, there were two political parties in Jinzhou during 1945-1949. The two were the Kuomintang and the Communists. Some factors that took part in the KMT losing the civil war were corruption, poor military strategy, over-dependence on American help, and Chiang Kai-Shek could not force his generals to follow his plans (Chang 93). Some economic problems during this time were inflation of money which led to women trafficking, a food shortage, and also a cloth shortage, there was not enough money so the majority of the people were poor. The KMT was initially corrupt, which was driven to bankruptcy many times. According to Li, the KMT operated with the help of different warlords, which required incentives to act and lead to hyperinflation. Now the Communists did not need to hand out money, they motivated people from primarily future incentives. What also led to the Communists winning was that the KMT military strategy focused on large scale war when the CCP strategy was focused on propaganda. In many cases throughout Wild Swans, the KMT did a poor job of planning. They lost focus on how to take care of the money that was supposed to benefit them. The rapid inflation was causing them and the cities around them hard times. For example, the value of the money was gone, many workers went on strike, and brawls and riots had broken out. The public was going crazy. Due to all of this upbringing, people started wanting nothing to do with the KMT. They were losing supporters and that was when many of the people decided to go over to the Communist
