Holmen takes a different approach in analyzing Oates’s short story by focusing primarily on features of Connie’s personality in connection to the events that take place over the course of “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Holmen describes how Oates foreshadowed Connie’s internal problems at the beginning of the story in the dialogue between Connie and her mother and through Connie’s habit of checking her appearance. Slimp argues that Connie’s lack of breath and changes in breathing as she gets more and more scared later in the story symbolizes a lack of spiritual development. He describes how towards the beginning of the story, Connie’s lack of spiritual development is reflected in her lack of breath that is referenced in various portions of the story. During the climax of the story, Slimp specifies how a blast of breath announcing that Connie “has at last developed a soul.” Slimp ultimately connects Oates’s “association of breath and spirit.” In the case of this article, the audience does need to know the context of the story to fully understand the references made by the author. However the author does use a unique approach to attempt to persuade the audience that spirituality through the metaphor of breath is a major theme in Oates’s story.
