“The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, is a short story, told by an unnamed narrator, about Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and other members of the army unit during the Vietnam War. O’Brien introduces and elucidates characters in this story by listing the tangible and intangible elements they carried with them. Although the men in this army unit are battling the enemy soldier, ironically, they are also conflicted upon their own thoughts about the Vietnam War and the true meaning of their experiences at war. To understand the war from different character’s perspectives, the ambiguous narrator plays a major role in effectively conveying the message of uncertainty and tells this fictional war story in a third person omniscient point of view. The author writes “The Things They Carried” to denote that the Vietnam War may have looked certain to the outside world, but from the inside, from a soldier’s view, it was the complete opposite. The soldiers’ doubtful and indefinite thoughts in the story express the vagueness of the War itself. Jimmy Cross himself could not focus, even as lieutenant. “His mind wandered. He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war. On occasion he would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into daydreams…” (O’Brien 954). He could only keep his mind on Martha even though he doubted her love for him. When contemplating Ted Lavender’s death, another soldier, Kiowa, states, “It seemed unchristian. He wished he could find some great sadness, or even anger, but the emotion wasn't there and he couldn't make it happen. Mostly he felt pleased to be alive” (O’Brien 959). The words “mostly” and “seemed” expose the doubt in Kiowa’s thoughts. To Kiowa, it does not matter that Ted died. He does not know of any reason for being in the war except to stay
