Ever wonder what is going on in the mind of a murderer? One piece of literature that centers around murderers is And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The story takes place in the 1930’s on Soldier Island. Ten strangers trapped on the island are one by one killed off in accordance with the poem Ten Little Soldiers. The Tell-Tale Heart, Cask of Amontillado, and Murderers are all literary works that give insight into the mind of a murderer like Christie’s classic book.
The Tell-Tale Heart was written in 1843 by Edgar Allen Poe. The short story is about a madman who murders an elderly gentleman due to his glass eye. Montresor gets Fortunato drunk off the other wine and then traps him behind a wall in the catacomb to starve to death. And Then There Were None is similar to this short story because both Wargrave and Montresor pick their victims by the wrongdoing the victims have done. At the beginning of The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor thinks, “ The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (Poe). Even when Montresor is luring Fortunato to his death, Fortunato continues to insult him. “You are not of the masons." "Yes, yes," I said; "yes, yes." "You? Impossible! A mason?"” ( Poe). Due to all of this insult and other offenses that the reader does not know of Montresor decides to kill Montresor. Now in And Then There Were None Wargrave also picks his victims based on past offenses, murder. “ The innocent must not suffer”(Christie 237).
