I am reading “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” by W.D. Wetherell and I am on page 6. This book is about a boy who is madly in love with a girl named Shiela Mant. For the past couple of summers he has been stalking her and one day he finally got the guts to ask her out. Unfortunatally the date didnt go so well. In this paper I will be questioning and connecting.

He had to pick fishing or a girl and i had to pick volleyball or dance. In the story the biy picked the girl, but wished he had picked the girl. I picked dance but wished i would have picked dance. I wish I would have picked dance because I had a volleyball game the next day and couldnt play as much. That was because I went to dance practice instead of volleyball practice. The boy picked the girl over then fish and realized that he had made the wrong decision. After making those desicions the boy and I both regreted them.

Is sacrificing passion for a special someone the best thing in the long run? In the story “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” written by W.D. Wetherell the young and naive narrator chooses a girl over his life long love of fishing. Wetherell uses internal conflicts with the narrator to increase the conflict and suspense. Due to Sheila Mant’s shallow personality and impulsive opinion the narrator lets the biggest fish he has ever caught go because he is afraid of what she will think of him. The narrator’s feelings for Sheila Mant go away and it makes him regret his decision of letting the fish go. In the story “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant the narrator made a long term decision on temporary feelings and emotions.

The book is narrated from the first person perspectives of three women: Skeeter,Aibleen and Minny.The twenty two year old Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan is the daughter of a prominent white family who has just graduated and wants to pursure her career as a writer but it’s 1960s and her mother will not be happy if she doesn’t have a ring on her finger. She has been brought up by black maids since she was young, and longs to find out why her much-loved maid, Constantine, has disappeared.Aibleen is a black,wise maid who is raising her seventeenth white child.She dedicates all her work time to Miss.Leeflot,while trying to heal the scars left by her own son’s death.Minny,Aibleen’s best frend is short,fat and the sassiest women in Mississippi.She is the best cook but she cannot mind her tongue resulting having being fired from nineteen jobs. Stockett’s characters are strong, sometimes bold, yet sometimes silent. She adds humor and fun, as well as danger and intrigue in the novel. She has done a great job writing from the point of view of numerous characters. All three of them had their own chapter.Every character has a personality, goals, and a backstory.
These girls have had a rough life. In 1910, their mother died and the four girls only have each other for all their weeps and worries. Also, their dad has been dead for years and ever since the death of their mother, life has just not been the same. They were left as orphans and took care of each other, since they were all they had. Then, something gave the Purcell girls a glimmer of hope. They had a guardian, who for the rest of their lives would take care of the girls. His name was Mr. Mackenzie and he was married to Mrs. Mackenzie and they had kids of their own. They have three sons; Gabriel, Geoffrey, and Antony. Also, they had one daughter; her name was Lucy. One child, though, would soon become very important in Julia’s life. His name was Master Geoffrey and he had been away at school ever since the Mackenzie’s started taking care of the Purcell girls, which was in January of 1910. At this time, he was the same age as Julia. They were both 15 years old. As soon as they first met, they wanted to get to know each other better. One of the first things Geoffrey noticed about Julia is that she was very much like her older sister, Frances; except, there was something special about her. The narrator in the story does not know everything in the story, the narrator cannot understand everything in the story, and can only describe everything that happens in the story through, the narrator’s view, and thoughts, portraying that the story is told in the first person limited point of view. For example, when Sheila was describing how fishing was boring, or uninteresting for her, the narrator tries to think of ways why her dislike of fishing came through, but never really figures it out, “Now I have spent a great deal of time in the years why Sheila Mant should come down so hard on fishing/ Had she tried it once” (Wetherell 3). This shows that the narrator is desperately trying hard to figure out why does, Sheila, someone that the narrator hold in high regard, hates something that, the narrator also holds in high regard. Despite, the previous mentions that the narrator had learned so much about Sheila, the narrator was not knowledgeable on the topics that Sheila was talking about in the canoe ride with the narrator. “It was a few minutes before I was able to catch up with her train of thought/I had no idea whom she meant” (Wetherell 2,3), many instances were showed that the narrator had really nothing in common with Sheila, and could not give much
I am reading “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant”, by W.D. Wetherell, and I am on page three. The story is about a boy who loves fishing. He has a neighbor who he thinks is really cute. Every time Sheila is sunbathing he likes to show off by swimming laps and diving off of the diving board. One day he got the guts to ask her out. He invites he to a music concert. He brings her to the concert by canoe, because he isn’t old enough to drive. He gets to know Sheila a little more, and Sheila states that she doesn’t like fishing. While he is bringing Sheila to the concert he gets a huge bass on his line and he has to choose between Sheila and the bass. In this journal I will be questioning and connecting.
This novel went into how she and her father both were similar in how they expressed and experienced their own identification in gender roles. Either it being shown in their own way or even it is being through one another, they did not realize how close they were until she understood herself at the end. This then became the opening to them discusses their life experiences that involved identifying with another gender, which made them gain a better understanding about each other. The reason why the readers gain this perspective was how she used this graphic novel technique to become concise and obtain a mutual understanding in what she was expressing and explaining throughout the novel. With this mutual understanding of how she made this graphic novel, then the readers can focus more on how in the beginning they thought they were very different people, but later on grew to understand that both choose different gender roles. This gave them many similar outcomes, which help them grow even closer than they were before. With that Bechdel stated at the end, “ He did hurtle into the sea, of course. But in the tricky reserved narrative that impels our entwined stories, he was there to catch me when I leapt.”, which suggest that even if he is gone in real life he is still a part of her life’s

The girl in this story is incredibly naive. Her character is very weak due to her inability to realize the inevitable. This creates the internal conflict in which she faces. By the usage of first-person point of view, Tallent enables the reader to realize the obvious truth that this girl refuses to see. The entire setting takes place in a small town, where there is "nothing else to do," inside of Jack's dirty old pickup truck, and symbolizes the filthiness of their sex based relationship.
As Cliff walks into the Kit Kat club he enters the world of promiscuous uninhibited dancers, and people of the like. Men approach him to dance, and women entice him with their charms. He obviously wasn’t all that accustomed to this kind of happening, but he didn’t shy away from it. The first night he lived this almost unreal experience, he met a woman. Sally was a one of a kind woman of her time, being on her own, making her own living, whether that living be on stage or with a man who suits her interest for a while.
As the student begins his essay, he points out that Sammy is part of the lower class structure. He is an “eighteen-year-old boy who is working as a checkout clerk in an A&P in a small New England town five miles from the beach” (2191). While working an afternoon shift on Thursday, he notices “these girls in nothing but bathing suits” (2191) enter the store. It is in this scene that the student begins to identify the differences between the group of girls and Sammy.
Her theme has often been the dilemmas of the adolescent girl coming to terms with family and a small town. Her more recent work has addressed the problems of middle age, of women alone, and of the elderly. In all honesty, I chose to read The Country Girls Trilogy by Edna O’Brien because it was the only text that I could get my hands on. After reading it though, I’m glad I had the luck of choosing it. I realized, while reading the trilogy, that throughout my course of study, I have not read very many female authors. I may have read a few short stories along the way, but most books that I have read for classes and for pleasure have been written by men. I saw the difference in writing styles as I read the first paragraph of the book and immediately liked the change of pace and detail-oriented style. I also found that I really connected with the main characters, Caithleen and Baba, whose real name is Bridget. I found it interesting that I invested such interest in two characters whose personalities are so different from my own. Caithleen was the narrator in the first two books, and I found that I connected with her most because of her details and innocence. The trilogy represents three phases of these women’s lives from their girlhood, to losing loves and the trials of marriage. Through it all, their interesting friendship changes according to the events in their lives until a sad and untimely end. I’m not sure that that I would want a friendship like Caithleen and Baba’s, but at least that had each other in the end, when the rest of the world seemed to have forgotten them. The excerpt in Colm Toibin’s anthology, The Penguin book of Irish Fiction, is from the first book in O’Brien’s trilogy called The Country Girls. For purposes of this paper, I will discuss the excerpt itself, and then the rest of the first book of O’Brien’s trilogy.

Growing up physically is never easy, but what can be even more difficult is growing up mentally. As a child you tend to look at the world in a very innocent way until you have experienced hurt or sadness. In the Poem “The River-Merchants Wife: A letter” by Ezra Pond’s the narrator of the poems childhood was cut short when she was married at a young age and was forced to mature and adapt to her new chapter in her life as a married woman. When some unforeseen circumstances come up in life it can pose some challenges that make growing up mentally very difficult. Growing up in Ezra Pond’s “The River-Merchants Wife: A letter” oversees more than just the physical aspects of growing older. The poem deals with a deeper meaning of growing up mentally at a faster pace than our bodies.
