Ted Kaczynski, The Unabomber, was one of the most prolific cases the FBI has ever worked. His bombing campaign and reign of terror lasted multiple decades until he was finally caught in arrested in 1996. His capture ended one of the more high profile reigns of terror ever perpetrated by an individual man.
Kaczynski was not your usual suspect. He grew up a gifted student, having a strong aptitude in math and science. He often struggled interacting with others because his intelligence often far exceeded those around him. He finished school early and enrolled in Harvard where he continued to excel academically. He moved back to the Midwest in 1969. It was at this point that Kaczynski began to become reclusive; people began having less and less contact with him. He moved to a sparsely populated area in Montana in order to become less and less dependent on technology. While living alone in Montana, he became very fond of nature and living by himself. He did not like what was becoming of the world with the advancements of technology and the detriment that it was bringing to the world around him. His resentment began to grow for people and their callous attitudes toward nature. It was here in the woods, all by himself, that he would begin his reign of terror, against the system that was slowly taking apart everything he cared about. His terror campaign officially began in 1978.
It was in 1978, when he mailed his first bomb that he began to register on the FBI’s radar. Although their ideologies and methods may vary, the terror that they inflict on the populous is quite similar. Ted Kaczynski is no exception. His ideologies about technology led him to commit acts of terror for years in hopes that people would listen to him and conform to what he believed was right.
