The book I read, Splinters in an African Log, was about Martha wall. She was a medical missionary to Africa in the 1930’s. She was a single female missionary in a time when the cultural norm was that a woman 's place was in the home not on the mission field. While attending Tabor College to get her nursing degree Martha felt God tugging at her heart about the need for medical missionaries in French West Africa. Leprosy was a rampant wild fire in the country of Africa and the need for nurses on the leper colonies was expedient. Martha, however, did not find the prospect of becoming a missionary exciting and spent some time running from the call God had obviously placed on her life. Finally, after much argument with the Lord she submitted an application to the Sudan Interior Mission and was accepted. Her first mission was on a station in a city called Wushishi. After being in France for a little under a year she was finally sent back to Africa to start her third term. The first place she was assigned during this term was at a mission compound near the town of Galmi. Her time at this station however was short for many health problems occurred while there. Eventually she requested a transfer and was sent to another mission station. Martha served many more years in Africa. She was a dedicated servant of the lord and served four different terms in Africa over the course of her lifetime. Martha’s love for Africa pours out of this book. Her desire to see the people of Africa saved and delivered from Islamism is so tangible that you can feel it. She tells her story in such a way that it inspires you to pack your bags and go straight to Africa! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and as someone who feels drawn to missions work it was encouraging. The Kingdom of Matthias by Paul E. Johnson and Sean Wilentz is a story of the rise and fall of a religious cult established by Robert Matthews (Matthias). Within his kingdom, Matthias and his followers, abided by Matthias, believes of the subjugation of women by men. Even though at the time the cult was in existence the United States was experiencing two great movements that urged the forward progression of women, the Market Revolution and the Second Great Awakening. Two women in particular are mentioned in Johnson and Wilentz’ book that were really suppressed by Matthias and his subjects. One was Isabella van Wagenen, the slave that worked in Mount Zion and even Matthias’ own daughter Isabella Matthews Laisdell. The Kingdom of Matthias reveals the 19th century experienced the presence of an oppressive “prophet” known as Matthias who tyrannically degraded women through cruel treatment, sexual advances, and belittling them in a society that was starting to notice the inclination of women’s rights, all of these violent and atrocious acts eventually lead to the downfall of Matthias’ kingdom.
Martha, even though she is only ever mentioned in the beginning of the book, still plays a huge role in the lives of the soldiers. In some ways, she is a large part of how the platoon’s lives played out, even a part of why one man died. Lt. Jimmy Cross is extremely affected by Martha as his one time girlfriend; he is obsessed with even the thought of her.-- So obsessed with her, he even becomes distracted to the point an accident occurs for which he blames himself for the longest time. One important aspect of Quaker life to understand before reading An Account of the Travels, Sufferings and Persecutions of Barbara Blaugdone, is the use of traveling ministers to spread the Quaker religion around the world. The Society of Friends, given the popular name “Quakers”, originated in England in the seventeenth century and quickly spread to the English colonies, and later to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Turkey, and America (Sharpless 393). The most influential people in this rapid spread of the Quaker religion were the missionaries. While Quakers believed that “no one should preach the Word without a direct call from God”, they did believe that any one “male or female, old or young (395)” could receive this call. The truth of the matter was, however, that the majority of the traveling ministers in the seventeenth century were women.
As I kept on reading, there was a strong connection between the novel and the Operation Auca missionary trip in Ecuador in 1956. The life of a native like Oknokwo’s and his tribe are rough and can be a problem with the more civilized people in a country. God needed some of His followers to reach towards the tribes to teach the Gospel, so that they can get along with anyone that intersects with the natives. In the mission trip in Ecuador, five missionaries were speared to death to spread God’s Word. After words, their wives took their places, took part in the native tribe, and members accepted Christ in their lives. When I read through the book, one question was connected to me; the question said, “What do Christian missionaries do in different cultures to spread the Gospel?”

In “Monique and the Mango Rains”, Holloway describes her encounters with the difficulties of the women in the village of Nampossela and childbirth practices of midwifes in Mali. Deborah Lamb can relate to the young women and the ladies that come into Stand at the Crossroads Ministry. Ms. Lamb said, “I have walked the same roads as many of the women, so I can be an encouragement to them. I can share with them, not only will one day be doing well on their own , they will be able to encouragement and help others”. Deborah Lamb said “I had a desire to help women because of the hard times I went through as a young woman raising four children on my own. If it were not for God and the people at my church, who come along side me to help, I don’t know where I would be today”.
I think that this narrative is important for us to read in order to understand the mind-sets of the colonists and the Indians at the time of King Philip’s War. I believe that it is an excellent source, and really allows the reader to get a peak at what life was like during the 17th century. I also think that it is amazing that she is the second “American” woman to write and publish a book, and it is interesting to see how strong she was to preserve her own life in such an unfamiliar and “uncivilized” situation.
During this time period, Mother Teresa adopted Indian citizenship and spent several months in Patna to receive medical training at the Holy Family Hospital before venturing off to complete her charity work. She began her missionary work by founding a school in Motijhil, Kolkata, and from the start, Mother Teresa was joined by a group of young women who helped her form a religious community with the basic foundation of helping the “poorest among the poor” (“Mother Teresa,” n.d.). While Mother Teresa’s efforts were noticed by several officials, the first year of her missionary work was wrought with difficulty. During this time, Mother Teresa had no income, she had to beg for food, and the temptation to return to her previous life at the convent was great. A diary entry written by Mother Teresa herself describes in detail the hardships and lessons that she experienced: “Our Lord wants me to be a free nun covered with the poverty of the cross. Today, I learned a good lesson. The poverty of the poor must be so hard for them. While looking for a home, I walked and walked till my arms and legs ached. I thought how much they must ache in body and soul, looking for a home, food, and health.
