“ Every year that I was the non-custodial parent I was able to spend about 58-59 days with my son. Less than 60 days out of every 365. Zack was able to spend over 300 with my son. In the 11 years that I was the non-custodial parent I was with my son for just under 2 of them. I lost 9 years of his life.” This is a small portion of Randy’s personal story in Daddy Why are You Crying. Unfortunately situations like this are not uncommon at all. The story goes on to say how Zach, the Mother’s new boyfriend and eventual husband, beat his son and molested the Mother’s daughter. It says how when they separated she allowed Randy to see his son, meaning Randy didn’t have any rights to his son. It talks about when they first separated how the Mother lived with Randy’s son in a pot dealer’s home. Randy later received custody of his son, but only because the mother willing gave him custody. The absence of fathers in children’s lives have been linked to higher aggression levels, lower stress management skills, lower self-esteem, higher depression levels and less self-control. Children in single parent homes account for 63% of all suicides. When both parents are involved in raising a child the incarceration risk is significantly lowered. Children in sole custody ( meaning one parent as the custodian ) have far more sleep problems, difficulties concentrating, loss of appetite, more frequent headaches, stomachaches, and dizzy spells, and report feelings of depression and general sadness. A child having a healthy relationship with their father is incredibly important. Obviously it’s important to have a healthy relationship with both parents, but that doesn’t happen as often as it should because of the way divorce cases are handled.
