Introduction Dr. Walter Kaiser writes Mission of God in the Old Testament out of need. As soon as people open their Bibles, they generally open to the New Testament. This is often because they were told by others that it is the best place to start. This is not necessarily untrue, but the Old Testament is looked upon as a secondary part of the Bible. However, the mission of God in the New Testament would not only be incomplete with the Old Testament, but also breeds confusion without the first half of this divine book. Dr. Kaiser begins the process of trying to help a large portion of Christians who don’t know how to read the Old Testament. In this particular work, Kaiser focuses on God’ heart for all people even in the Old Testament. There is a common misconception among most Christians, that God only cared about Israel in the Old Testament. Kaiser tries to dispel that myth by lining out different areas in the Old Testament where God is trying to show his heart for the nations, specifically through the nation of Israel.

In Genesis 12, God tells Abram that he would be a great nation, That God will bless him, bless those who bless him, and curse those who curse him (9). In personal reading of this text, I only noticed the blessing. However, I never took the time to notice why God was blessing Abram. It had nothing to do with Abram being a particular great person. It was God demonstrating his favor and blessing upon Abram so that he would be a blessing! Furthermore, that all people on earth may be blessed through him. This is not something that is exclusive to the nation of Israel. This is so much bigger than them. This is demonstrating the heart that God has for all people on earth.
