Throughout the years, there has been amazing advances in technology that were never thought possible. These advances include devices that turn lights on and off, recognize a voice, and play music without moving a finger. There are also ways to store information that was also only dreamt about. In “There will come soft rains”, there is technology way beyond comprehension. The author even gives some seemingly non-living objects characteristics of humans. Within the short story, the author describes a house, which is characterized as the main character. This house is given many characteristics only people should possess. For example, in the story is states “In the living room the voice-clock sang, tick-tock, seven o’clock, time to get up, time …show more content…

This is easily able to be drawn from all the examples the author presents the reader with. The house can defend itself, as stated on page 308 where it says “They thudded against chars, whirling their mustached runners, kneading the rug ap, sucking gently at hidden dust.” This is referring to little robot mice that clean the entire house, and have kept it spotless. The house also shows a will to survive by defending itself during tragedy’s. In the story it states “The wind blew. A falling tree bough crashed through the kitchen window. Cleaning solvent, bottles, shattered over the stove. The room was ablaze in an instant. “Fire!” screamed a voice. The house lights flashed, water pumps shot water from the ceilings” (311). This is describing a situation when a fire is started within the house and it defends itself by spraying water from the ceiling in an attempt to save itself. Another example of how it shows the will to survive is on page 311 where it also states “The house tried to save itself. Doors sprang tightly shut, but the windows were broken by the heat and the wind blew and sucked upon the fire.” This is yet another attempt to save itself from the fire, and
