Lynda Barry’s One! Hundred! Demons! is a graphic memoir of Barry’s personal life in which she illustrates the different kinds of demons encountered while growing up. These demons caused her to feel neglected by everyone around her and expressed her emotions through art. In the chapter The Visitor, Barry is drawn by an interesting teenager named Dean who influences her social belonging negatively. Looking closely through the subject to subject panels, Barry’s emotions and mood consistently change her facial features. The technique used is more abstract and simplified since her psychological feelings are universal and relatable for any type of audience (McCloud 31). When Barry feels excited, fascinated, and unusual, her eyes tend to be bigger than usual and contain dilated pupils. Aside from her eyes, Barry’s change of emotions also affects the color of her skin tone. Normally, her skin tone is fair, but when she feels pressured and anxious about not fitting in, her skin tends to turn pink and darker while she hides her face with her hair. Barry attempts many times in figuring out where exactly she belongs socially. In an act of desperation of needing to feel comforted, Barry falls into Dean’s persuasion and consumes acid. At the moment, she’s in ultimate awe as her mouth stays open from fascination as she entered into another alternate reality. Words cannot describe the sensation and would be better detailed in color and lines. The vision Barry witnesses is weird, unordinary, and an intense trance. The colors in the background are bright and mixed with secondary colors. It mainly consists of warm yellow blended with other shades of green.
