Society prides itself on moving forward. On growing, learning and improving. Lessons from history are reviewed and analyzed to ensure the same errors are not committed in the future. In commerce, governments stepped in to protect society and the environment with regulations. Government regulations control and define what business may and may not do. Initially, government’s commercial regulations proved beneficial and even crucial to society. However, over time governments continued to impose regulations upon business which have gone far beyond public safety to a level which adversely affects the growth of western economies and entrepreneurship. Government regulations have created undue hardships for entrepreneurs; they are unnecessary and can even be harmful to its citizens. Through …show more content…
A high minimum wage is another regulation instilled by the government that negatively impacts entrepreneurs looking to grow. This government created initiative, while appearing beneficial to low income, low skilled workers actually negatively affects them. A recent study preformed by David A. Macpherson found that a rising minimum wage directly correlated with an increased unemployment rate. This is in large part due to small businesses being unable to afford to pay these higher rates to their employees preventing their business from growing and hiring more workers. If minimum wage is set too high small business may even be forced out of business due to their inability to pay their staff. Companies are also more likely to replace workers with machines whenever possible in the effort to save money. This idea of raising the minimum wage sounds great but when one delves deeper into the issue it creates a number of economic issues which can be at best detrimental and can even be fatal in the life of a
In conclusion, policy makers and practitioners often try to assist in the formation of new firms but do not always succeed. Many firms fail despite all the assistance however the important factor is that the government continues to promote their creation so that new jobs and industries can be created. (Storey 1994) Both policy makers and practitioners need to ensure a level playing field so that the economy can grow, develop and compete with other economies around the world.
Governments can adopt laws and also dis allow commercial activity like banning Uber from cities and
...efits from adopting unfair business practices and discouraging competition are much higher than the expected penalty and punishment. With changing time, there is need to make these laws more effective and relevant.
Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour has been extensively debated over the last year or so. Minimum wage is the undermost wage allowed by law to be given to an employee for their services. Introduced in 1939, its purpose was to stabilize the economy, which was healing from the Great Depression. Most importantly, it was designed to protect the health and welling-being of employees. Currently, the Federal Government 's minimum is $7.25 per hour ($14,500 per year). The ones in favor of the increase are saying that it used to be a living wage; however, now it is not and it now needs to be line with changes to the cost of living. In addition, an increase in minimum wage can increase the productivity and decrease income inequality and poverty. On the other spectrum, the ones who are against the increase are saying that the increased labor cost will drive up unemployment, affect small businesses negatively, and cause other workers from different
The shockingly low minimum wage in America is borderline unethical. Since the minimum wage was established in 1938, there’s been controversy about how much it should be. It was originally set at an amount that would allow workers to maintain a minimal standard of living (30 Days). Since then, the minimum wage has been raised 22 times, but this hasn’t been enough to support the same goal. Not only has inflation made minimum wage worth significantly less, but the cost of living has gone up. Two thirds of American citizens support raising minimum wage again (Mantel, 76), but some still oppose it, saying it would hurt jobs and the economy. Although raising the federal minimum wage would most likely cause some jobs to be lost, it should be raised because of the positive effect it would have on poverty rates, the economy, and the individuals living on it.
Raising the minimum wage would affect employees. Supporters believe that raising minimum wage will improve people’s lives. We live in a consumer society. People who earn more spend more on products and services. As stated by BuzzFlash Headlines, “Higher Minimum Wage Would Create Over 100,000 New Jobs Nationally” (BuzzFlash Headline). Families would be able to use the money they earn to save for important things such as bills. If they wanted to, they could also buy more groceries or appliances. Non-supporters feel that raising the minimum wage will create many job losses. According to Economic Policy Institute, “Across the phase-in period of the increase, GDP would grow by about $22 billion, resulting in the creation of roughly 85,000 net new jobs over that period.”(David Cooper). If a family owned business has to raise the wage rate they pay, it is possible they will not hire as many people as they usually do. Businesses across the nation would be impacted by raising the minimum wage. According to the CNBC, “The great division among businesses and economists over the impact of raising...
Raising the minimum will end up hurting Americans more than helping them. The people that are for raising minimum wage are people who believe that increasing minimum wage can help those people who are unskilled and need an income they can live on. Yet, raising minimum wage would do the opposite and make employers have to fire people who earn minimum wage, because they can't afford the higher wages. People need to realize that increasing the minimum wage would hurt people more than help them. In the end increasing minimum wage would result in some people being let go, for the reason, businesses can't afford paying them minimum wage anymore.
“the exercise of that authority is curbed and shaped by the concern of government officials for its possible adverse effects of business, since adverse effects can cause unemployment and other consequences that government officials are unwilling to accept. In other areas of public policy, the authority of government is again curbed and shaped by concern for possible adverse effects of business” (Lindblom page 178).
These are just a few of the many awful effects that raising the minimum wage brings. When workers hear a raise in the minimum wage, all they think about is a bigger paycheck and not what will happen to low-skilled workers, the cost of living, and the added stress to unemployment rates. New workers with less skills will have a harder time finding a job. The cost of living is going to hike due to inflation. Unemployment rates will rise due to added stress on businesses. An increase in the minimum wage is great news to a high schooler saving up to buy a new phone, but terrible news to someone trying to raise a family. If the minimum wage continues to increase, these problems will get worse instead of
This is somewhat related to my second reason on why minimum wage should not increase in the United States. Companies are going to raise their prices on their products. They will increase their prices in order to be able to pay all of their employees. That situation will cause the employers extreme anxiety due to money issues. Companies may have to eventually shut down if they are not able to pay their employees like they need to be paid. If the minimum wage increased and businesses/employers have to pay those higher minimum wages (higher salaries/income) to their employees. To offset them having to pay more money to their employees, they offset that extra cost to the customers or consumers generally who shop with them. It creates a ripple effect for a city, county, or region. Prices have been going up without the increase of minimum wage so imagine when if I does happen to go up. Increasing minimum wage will definitely hurt small businesses more than
Raising the minimum wage will have a positive effect on business. An abundant amount of companies believe that increasing the minimum wage would decrease gender inequality in the work area. As supported by Jason Furman, ("Minimum Wage - ProCon.org."), “ [it] is one of the important [reasons]... for inequality at the bottom.” Another reason it would aid business is that it will decrease turnover and increase productivity in the workarea. Researches have concluded that increasing the minimum wage will make employees work harder to keep their job. For example, in the fashion industry, if workers were paid more, it would result in a faster increase in production. Right now fashion is changing at a rate faster than what the companies can provide. By increasing the minimum wage, it would help companies to keep up with the fast pace
Raising the minimum wage will prove to be detrimental as it will take away opportunities for high school students to gain insight and explore different career options. Additionally, it will also reduce the unemployment rate, making it harder for the working poor to meet their basic needs in order to survive. Thereby, raising the minimum wage is not a feasible option because it will only deteriorate situations for the labor force.
Many critics claim that that raising minimum wage increases unemployment, especially for unskilled workers, and harms small businesses, including grocery stores and restaurants. The argument declares that companies such as these rely mostly on unskilled workers for labor, and if the minimum wage increases, then their profits and, therefore, hiring would decline, creating a...
Over all the appropriate role of government has always been an argument discussing whether it is actually helping our economy or is the government gaining too much power over the markets. However the economy could not prosper without the actions imposed to assist in diffusing the power over the markets and regulating as well as enforcing the law in order for things to done in a beneficial way to both the consumers and the markets.
Many areas could be affected by a change in minimum wage, but potentially the most drastic change would be to unemployment. Advocates of a higher minimum wage insist that a raise would significantly decrease the unemployment rate in the United States and improve the quality of living. However, there are conflicting opinions on this. Higher minimum wage would mean higher labor costs for business owners, thus making it more difficult for employers to maintain the amount of workers they have, let alone add new employees. Raising the minimum wage does not increase the value of the worker's labor; it increases the cost of the worker's labor. As a general rule the more something costs, the less of it people will buy. This is true of not only consumer goods but also of workers in the labor market. Many jobs come from large corporations but they also come from small businesses. There are 23 million small businesses in America, accounting for 54% of sales and 55% of jobs. Raising the minimum wage means that all of these corporations and businesses will have to dig deeper in...
