William Shakespeare’s most recognized play, Romeo and Juliet, has inspired and moved audiences for centuries. It is a story of two kids of opposing houses falling in love, only to be torn apart by destiny, and end up taking their own lives so they can truly be together. While the ending seems to be of the sick twists of fate, there seems to be a more austere underlying cause. Romeo and Juliet did not die at the hands of destiny, it was their foolish and immature decisions that led them to their tragic end.

Their first mistake was the decision to rush their love. Romeo was heartbroken over Rosaline; he was crushed and beaten because she would not love him back, “Griefs of mine lie heavy in my breast,” (Shakespeare 382). He was supposedly so heartbroken that he …show more content…

They were too impulsive and thought that ending their lives was the only option left. Juliet couldn’t just live with the fact of having to marry Paris. Romeo couldn’t live without his precious wife. So they decided not to. They killed themselves and now everyone else had to deal with the consequences.

Some might argue that is was obviously fate that pulled the strings of this story. How else would Romeo have met the servant and known about the party? How else would Romeo have met Juliet and fell in love? What else could have caused Juliet’s fake suicide plan have backfired? Who else would Romeo have been fighting with his choice to kill himself?

However, there are many reasons why it wasn’t fate in those instances. Romeo chose to go to the party. He went even though he wasn’t supposed to. They chose to get married and believed that it truly was love. They chose to go through with Juliet’s plan, even though they didn’t know if Romeo had gotten the message. They chose to “defy fate” and kill themselves. The unfortunate ending of the play was truly because of their careless decisions, if they had not been so spontaneous, they may have lived happily ever
