The Sugar Act of 1764 was an act in which the British taxed the American colonies in order to raise their income. Britain was in great debt due to the French and Indian war. They needed a way to enforce American colonist to pay them, and this was the cause of the Molasses Act in 1733. The act imposed a high tax on Molasses - a popular product used for making rum. A problem occurred when the colonist were ignoring the tax and smuggling from the Spanish and French.
