In the state of Virginia the board of counseling has set aside two different ways that practitioners can become certified to counsel client with substance abuse issues. One way is called the practice of licensed substance abuse treatment practitioners (LSAPT) and the other way is called the certification of substance abuse counselors and substance abuse counseling assistants (CSAC). Both ways to become certified/licensed to practice with substance abusing clients is governed by the Virginia board of counseling but each license requires different education, training, exam, work, and practice standards. Education Education is key for all future counselors and it is imperative that each clinician understand the rules and regulations that their state holds for their desired course career. For the LSAPT licensure an applicant needs to acquire a completed graduate degree from a program that specifically prepares them to practice with substance abuse treatment or any related counseling disciplines. Their collegiate career should have 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of graduate study and must have completed the general core curriculum that contain at least of three semester hours of a 4.0 quarter hours in each of …show more content…
