Subsoil investigation is a type of site exploration that involves sampling and testing the soil at the site to obtain geotechnical information for a safe geotechnical evaluation and design. It is a discovery of the ground conditions which will be built on.
Subsoil investigation provides data on surface and underground conditions at the site. Samples will be obtained for visual inspection and to determine the physical properties of the soil. The purpose of subsoil exploration includes examining the nature of the soil at the site. The first stage is a desk study. Desk studies are an essential part of the site investigation process. They help get a better understanding of variations in ground conditions, reduce potential delays on site and help produce an accurate budget. Vegetation – Results of the position of all trees, hedges and shrubs on site must be recorded.
Structures – Record the position of any other structures on site structures shown on the air photographs or Ordinance Maps that have been removed. Soil and rock – Record and describe any exposed soils or rocks that are present. Samples should be taken to determine the rock and soil type. If there is soft soil you can dig shallow holes using an auger to get an idea of the soil characteristics. The auger is held vertically and is driven into the ground by rotating its handle. At every 30 cm of depth, the auger is taken out and the soil samples collected.Any holes created should be made good to prevent possible injury.
