Merriam- Webster (n.d.) states the definition of proctor is, "one appointed to supervise students (as at examination)." Proctoring means that there is something that is deemed qualified to sit and watch you, the student, take your exam within the guidelines that have been set forth by the University. The University of the People requires proctored exams because all of our courses are online. Therefore, certain exams need to be administered in an environment that is controlled by someone that can ensure that there has been no cheating; time extensions; outside sources being used; in general so that all rules and guidelines for the exam have been met by the student. At a University where you attend a class in person, there is a proctor present for exams - the instructor. 54) states that the criteria necessary for becoming a student's proctor is that they are a responsible and respected adult at least 21 years of age; be willing to comply with University of the People policies and procedures; have adequate and reliable access to the internet and email; and to be available in person with the student for the entire length of the proctored exam.
