Introduction It is the responsibility of the principal to set the tone within the building. Setting the tone starts with the school vision. From the vision for the building a principal can build-in the structures needed to promote a positive school culture, provide/support an effective instructional program, apply best practice to support student learning, and work towards designing professional growth plans. Each of these areas requires time, effort, and an understanding of needs. A principal’s most effective tools are proper self-awareness and acting in a manner consistent with his core beliefs. Through self-awareness a principal has the knowledge of the various types of individuals needed to support and augment areas of personal difficulty. As the principal acts in a manner consistent with his core beliefs he is better equipped to “walk the talk” on a daily basis. Promote a Positive School Culture One of the most important things a principal can do is set the stage for a school to have a positive school environment. To establish a positive school culture the principal needs to start by having a working knowledge of the community as a whole. To develop this understanding the principal needs to have knowledge about the staff within the building, the families served, and the rest of the surrounding community. We have tools within the Anchorage School District that can be used to help in gaining some of this insight, and to monitor progress over time. One of those tools is the Climate and Connectedness survey. Knowledge of the staff is important in helping the principal in composing a leadership team that works towards identifying and addressing the needs of the school. Principals need to find the right balance of these factors to provide the environment for these successes to take place.
