George W. Bush said education is “the great lifting mechanism of an egalitarian society.” He means, education is the great equalizer amongst individuals in a society established on equality. Unfortunately, access to education is not always as equal, nor are we living in an egalitarian society. In 1965, congress passed legislation, namely the Higher Education Act of 1965, in order to diminish the distance between students and the reality of higher education. Despite their seemingly positive intentions, the office of Student Financial Assistance has evolved into a very unpopular entity of the executive branch. Applicants are continuously frustrated by the aid, or lack of aid, that they are awarded. I was once a critic of the system and believed that I was being cheated out of aid that was rightfully mine. In fact, this is the point of view that I intended to support, in this paper. However, once I began to gather secondary sources, I found that this point of view lacked sufficient support and was untrue. Thus, my opinion has been changed. My opinion has been changed not only by research, but also by changing my perspective of the entire situation from narrow to broad and from particular to all-inclusive.

Now, as a result of this assignment, I have examined the system and how it functions and compared it with what it was intended to accomplish. My conclusion is that it works. I examined the allocation of funds amongst the spectrum of incomes, and I believe it’s just. I have also, extensively examined the lower class, who I once pointed a finger at. My conclusion is, when this nation establishes equality in the areas of, employment, housing, primary education, health care, racial and ethnic issues, etc., that is when we can talk about the small gap between each class in the amount of federal aid awarded to those classes. When the playing field has been leveled in all other variable subjects that is when the amount of aid should be congruent between all classes.

In Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut tries to make sense of a seemingly meaningless world by creating a novel whose narrative is more a conjunction of events instead of a linear story. Vonnegut beings his novel with a confession about why he wrote this book, he starts, “all this happened more or less” (Vonnegut 1). As a reader it is alarms are signaled when the author themselves makes an omission about the reality of the tale about to be told. He spends the first chapter giving an autobiographical view into what shaped his life and how this book needed to be written. Vonnegut says he thought he would have a lot to say about the bombing in Dresden that “all [he] would have to do would be to report what [he] had seen” (2). But instead “not many words about Dresden came from [his] mind then—not enough of them to make a book, anyway” (2). The realities of war have long been tainted by history, retailing the brutal events as a saviour’s tale full of honour, glory and patriotism. However, the truth sits far away from the textbooks and scholars. Those who have marched, fought and survived that blood thirsty, chaotic development can testify to its destructiveness. However, the absurdity and trauma causes scars that lay in deep ravines logic cannot reach. Therefore, Vonnegut resources to a parallel planet, as his only means of explaining the unexplainable, in hopes of unveiling war's folly and shake his readers into action so that Earth does not become a planet full of futile toilet plungers.
This article was stimulating to me because it related with me on a personal level. I have been discriminated upon many times in my life and this article excellently explained how white privilege plays a role in determining which groups are in the high or low end of the hierarchy spectrum. In Sklar’s article, Imagine a Country, she explains the growing income inequality between individuals by using several statistics that show the rising wealth gap between the lower, middle, and upper class. Throughout her article, Sklar addresses the controversial topic of high government spending by pointing out that there is an unequal amount of resources that are distributed between large programs such as defense and social programs that help reduce poverty. Her critics have stated that because she is presenting statistical facts as it pertains to income inequality, that she is therefore obligated to include proposals that will address and solve this dilemma. After about six months, the scientists discovered to their disbelief not only did the human stem cells survive in the rats’ spinal cords, but they underwent mitosis at least twice, and there were three times the amount of human stem cells found in the rats than the amount that was injected initially.

The critical challenge within in today’s society is that college tuition should be free or if not free, more affordable for all students. Certainly, higher education should not be considered a luxury where only the wealthy could afford, but an opportunity for all caste systems. It must be an accessible and affordable opportunity for all students in order for them to invest in their education. Higher education is important because it provides more careers to choose from than the careers offered without having a college degree. Ultimately, the issue here is whether it is right to make college tuition more affordable for the students.
When considering social welfare in the United States, one can clearly notice that there is a wide range of different policies. According to Howard Jacob Karger and David Stoesz, provided benefits that are intended to meet the essential life needs of individuals (such as active work, revenue, relationships, health care, sustenance, and shelter), (which) are regulated under social welfare policy (2010, p. 3). For the purpose of this paper, we will analyze a specific social welfare policy known as president Obama’s Race to the Top initiative. In general terms, this policy was shaped on four areas of core education reform, which will be discussed later. Even though the main subject is centered on education, this policy clearly has many different focuses. For this reason, we will mainly focus on higher education. This includes the following goals: helping families in the middle class afford college, keeping the cost of college down, building more strength within community colleges, and increasing public participation in government (The White House, n.d.). The most attention will be given to the individual initiatives related to making college more affordable and keeping college costs down.
The factors are heavily supported by empirical scientific data. For instance, the feeling of happiness is created and regulated biologically by the release of the neurotransmitter, dopamine. Dopamine is produced in the ventral tegmental area of the brain. Subsequently, it is released during pleasurable situations and motivates one to seek out pleasurable activity (Bromberg-Martin, Matsumoto, & Hikosaka, 2010). Thus, dopamine is essential to experiencing the feeling of happiness. Conversely, positive psychology does not play a role in dopamine production. So if it doesn’t increase dopamine levels, the it doesn’t increase happiness. In addition, the limbic system of the brain is also influential in the regulation of emotion and motivation. The limbic system is an interlinked system of nerves and networks in the brain, involving several areas near the edge of the cortex concerned with instinct and mood (Kalat, 2013). It controls the basic emotions of fear, pleasure, and anger. The proper function of the limbic system is dependent on a healthy brain that is properly interacting with biological chemicals that are produced by the body and received from our dietary intake. Positive Psychology is important in the sense of how many time it has been seen that successful people have issues because of the lack of positive influence in their lives and that seeing ourselves in a positive way can help prevent or cure many mental illnesses like depression or anxiety. The basic idea of Positive Psychology is that this moment is better than the last and the next will be better than this one. Financial Aid in Education A guy in $50,000 of debt has got to be irresponsible with his money, right? Actually, it is more likely that he is a college student. Hundreds of thousands of college students around the country are in financial predicament because of the government?s impersonal financial aid policies. The federal government?s current system has too many quirks that end up hurting the people that financial aid is supposed to help.
All of the theories/concepts discussed in this paper have helped to change the course of my life in a very positive way. Being mindful has taught me to be more open to new experiences and points of view; being religious helped me cope with many negative situations in my life; using Fredrickson’s undoing hypothesis taught me how to think positive in negative situations; having flow taught me how to be more focused; having time affluence taught me how to value the more important things in life over money; and having hope keeps my spirit up and prevents me from giving up on my goals. All these concepts/theories are very important towards positive living and they have definitely helped me deal with many situations in a more positive manner.
