Student Biographies Online Global Interdependence Literature Circles Through literate conversations, we believe we can begin to understand and empathize with the realities of our world in a richer way. Hey Andrea, we were sharing this today with the group and the subject of privacy etc. came up. Although only members can see these bios, kids can copy and paste off the site, so we added a bunch of stuff here. We thought this would be a good opportunity to talk to the kids about internet safety. Let me know what you think. We also added the suggestions about providing a global link. L Excellent - these are all great points/ideas To further identify yourself when you are online, students are going to write short biographies. Similar to the biographies that authors write about themselves, these short biographies will serve to give others a little window into your life. Your biography must: 1. Be written from the "third person point of view." This means you will refer to yourself in the third person - Example: "Jane came into this world in 1991 and nothing has been the same since her arrival." 2. Be between 4 sentences (minimum) and no longer than 8 sentences (maximum). In order to write more about yourself, you'll have to combine your sentences, use sentence openers and semi colons to extend the length of your sentences. 3. You may include the following: birthplace, where you have lived, where you currently reside. Include reference to your other family members, hobbies and interests. 4. Include any experiences, understandings or first hand accounts you've had in relation to these global issues. 5. Be handed in for evaluation and may be posted in your profile space on Moodle (after teacher & parent approva... ... middle of paper ... ..., shoveling manure, and even teaching beginners at the local stable; it was during her teen years that Lisa refined her inability to accurately track time, something her husband Bruce refers to as “horse time”. Lisa attended UVIC sometime ago, trained to be an English and Social Studies teacher, and started her teaching career at Carihi Secondary in Campbell River. Lisa and her husband Bruce married sometime ago and are learning more about life through their two sons, Keegan and Sebastian. The Cooke family enjoys Sunday morning cross-country skiing, soccer, eating, and recently, during a winter trip to Cuba, realized how much they love to travel. Presently, Lisa spends her time running, reading, socializing, and working with English and Humanities 9 students at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary in the Comox Valley. She still has a habit of slipping into “horse time”.
4. Also be careful of run-on sentences. Let your sentences contain only one or two ideas, not three or four. Do not over-use semicolons or colons, use a period instead.
. Describe your culture. Include things like place of birth, where you were raised, family structure, educational experiences, and career history. What else needs to be included?
Being literate does not only mean that you understand to read and write. I believe that it’s a way you take advantage of what is given to you. Having the power to understand and acknowledge what is being said and read gives and great advantage of literacy. Graduating with honors from my senior class has given me greater self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment .Now being literate has given me great opportunities such as coming to college and given hope that we can do anything in this world

For me, reading as well as rereading, books such as Junie B Jones, Berenstain Bears, or the Harry Potter series, impacted my life immensely by increasing my vocabulary, developing my vital language skills and many more developmental skills. In the past, being literate meant beating kids in how many books I could read and being able to comprehend difficult vocabulary, but now being literate in the adult world means developing new and creative ideas or being able to prosper an opinion based on facts and previous knowledge.
“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man,

In today’s society, a vast number of people are well educated. They have the equal opportunity to choose their own path in life by getting an education. A primary educational aspect of every human being is to learn to read. Being able to read is a primary goal of people in human society, as well as important in itself to society; it takes people far beyond their wildest dreams. A person who is literate has few limitations on what they can do; the world is an open playing field, because a person that is literate has the ability to become very successful in life.
John-Raphael Straude defines autobiography as, “a dialogue of the self with itself in the present about the past for the sake of self-understanding” (Staude 249). Although autobiography may acquire many functions, its aid in understanding oneself is an important one. In particular, autobiography and narrative promote understanding of people’s lives, the world, and improve their sense of connectedness with the world around them.
The third essay I wrote was a profile essay. The profile essay I wrote was about a particular relationship that was important to me and how this person had an aspect on my life. The person I wrote about was my mother Marie Dean. In the essay I talked about how she has shown me and my brother that with determination and perseverance, we can accomplish anything we put our minds to. Another thing I talked about was how hard-working, strong and intelligent Marie Dean is.
- At first I didn’t know where to start, I thought writing a profile would be easy, but it turns out it’s not especially as English is my second language and with a lot of tests last week and this week I didn’t have time to go to the Writing Center seeking help with my writing. Therefore I just turned to my textbook and just follow instructions there the best that I could.
A personal statement is a document required in education programs as well as when one is applying for a job. It is a document that is written to describe a person’s strength or weakness. It is therefore an important document that one must always have ready any time anywhere. Personal statements do not have to look the same. They may be written focusing on one’s interest for example a personal statement written specifically to apply for a specific job. What appears inside is what gives that person credibility on whether to get the job or not. It is a crucial document to have it written well and professionally by someone who is skilled, creative and knows what is expected.
We have many global problems, but we are lacking global institutions powerful enough to effectively address such problems as global terrorism, human rights abuses, global warming, the ozone layer, pollution of the oceans and rivers, arms trade, child soldiers, war, the weaponization of space, and nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. Finding a way to participate in solving these and other global problems is one of the great challenges of our time.
Upon writing this paper I felt uncomfortable. I thought “how do I write about myself?” I thought this because at this point in my education I have yet to do so. This really made me think about who I am. Physically I have red hair, I am big, and tall. Some groups I associate with are the Athletes, academics, and my family. I am interested in plenty of things such as politics and reading. My personality is described as happy, fun, intelligent, loving, and caring. I also have a few things I am passionate about like education, science, independence, and friends. I am also defined by my job where I would describe myself as working, progressive, and patient. So, twenty words to describe me are; red-headed, big, tall, athletic, academics, family, politics, strong, happy, fun, intelligent, loving, caring, education, science, independent, friends, working, progressive, and patient.
