Being an immigrant is difficult for some people. It requires a lot of preparation not just the belongings people intend to keep, but also their psychological and emotional state wherein they will have to live their new lives in an unfamiliar community. Some immigrants migrate to a foreign country without preparing themselves mentally and emotionally which most often leads them encountering depression or anxiety. Adjusting to a place is one factor that these people must do in order to survive in a place where an individual has no knowledge about. Adapting is always difficult for some people. They may be intrigued by how a certain community enjoys a particular doing. A country’s music, dance, sport, or food may have a big impact with some immigrants. An article states that football is a sport that Germans and some immigrants have an interest with. A country’s government makes changes on how it can benefit the community. Although some laws are easy to comprehend, many immigrants are still having a hard time following some laws. Katherine Garett, the author of the article “Living in America: Challenges Facing New Immigrants and Refugees”, interviewed Neb, a Mexican immigrant from Schuyler. He told Garett the following: “You think that you can do the same things here and that is where problems start. The culture is different and laws are stricter and they have to be respected. Over there you just have to know how to drive, but here you need a license; this is one of the problems one will find. Many obstacles. You get scared when the police stop you because you don’t understand” (292). Some immigrants, like Neb, are having a difficult time comprehending the laws that communities, like Schuyler, are implementing.
