Struggles In The Handmaid's Tale

Many sense internal struggles in life. Similarly, literature characters develop tragic internal struggles within story lines. Within previously studied works of literature, character such as Offred from the Handmaids Tale, and Hamlet from the play The Hamlet experiences such internal issues, causing intensity in the read. To begin, Offred, the narrator and main character from The Handmaids Tale experiences major struggles while she remains in Republic of Gilead as a handmaid. Firstly, Offred develops inner difficult, caused by her Husband Luke not being around. While a scene in Gilead, Offred states, “[…] I covered the bed and lay down on it…I wanted to feel Luke lying beside me…I wanted to feel Luke lying beside me, but there wasn’t room” (52). Offred tries imagining the presence of Luke, but is unable to because of the lacking space on her bed. As the audience is able to view the current state of mind of Offred, intensity builds because of the comparison of the relationship and state of mind change of the character. Secondly, the narrator, Offred herself provides the audience with a comparison of circumstance in the earlier life and current life. She clarifies, “I think about Laundromats. What I wore to them: shorts, jeans, jogging pants. What I put into them: my own clothes, my own soap, my own money, money I had earned myself ” (9). One sees that the government’s power has changed what the citizen is able to do, visible in Offred’s flashback.
