Throughout the novel Frankenstein the structure of writing and perspective changes greatly. Through a deep timeline of Imagery and Information, Mary Shelley proposes the idea of a what if scenario. What if a man could create life? What would happen to this idea of life and death, would this be good or bad in the hands of a single man. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein structure is the most important aspect of her writing, how does this shape the perspective of the novel?
In the first part of this novel it is made from four different letters telling to how the story has come. The beginning of the novel leads to the creation of this creature with “hair of lustrous black, teeth of pearly whiteness, and straight black lips” (55). After Victor’s wanderings and the murder of William, Justine is prosecuted for his death and then penalized to death. Victor made it his sole objective to hunt down the creature and end him, and after solely traveling through harsh weather and icy mountains he finds the creature. The story then changes through the perspective of the creatures eyes. To find a place to live with the De Lacey’s and hunting down Victor to propose the crazy idea of creating him a companion to find love. To this point forward it is Victors purpose to create this being and to never see the creature past then.
Although multiple perspectives can sometimes confuse a reader, Mary Shelley creates a deep connection between the visions of two characters. The creator Victor, who sees the creature as horrible and a killer. And to the Creature who sees the niceness in people and learns how to speak, though don’t be deceived since the creature wonders its identity and seeks answers. This connection creates the theme of fate vs. free will. The fate of Victor is predestined to contact his creation again, the creature expresses free will by understanding why someone would create him and finding
