Before I read the articles, I related the term “strategy” to the game of chess. In the game of chess, strategy is extremely important because it can either make you or break you. In terms, one wrong move can be the end of the game. Both players need to carefully think of which “moves” they want to make and think of the possible outcomes. My definition of strategy is taking a course of plan and evaluating every possible outcome (negative or positive). After reading the articles, my perception of strategy changed tremendously because I did not know it was so complex than I first perceived it. So much strategic thinking and planning goes into strategy in order to get the best optimal results. Porter defines strategy as, “Making trade-offs in …show more content…
He explains how Southwest offers short flights, low-cost, avoids large airports and does not fly long distances. Southwest strategy is to target business travelers, families, and students with low fares, which attract sensitive customers (Porter, 1996). From my volunteer experience at Virginia Garcia Wellness Center, it uses community engagement approach to reach and serve migrant and seasonal farmworkers. I am not too sure what strategy approaches Virginia Garcia endures, but from volunteering and observing, I noticed a few. Virginia Garcia recruits at the local level to build a rapport within the community to create opportunities for patients to learn and create social connections (Virginia Garcia Website, …show more content…
This quote solidifies how the healthcare system in the U.S. is based. In this instance, I believe that government involvement was a determining factor to its failure. If the government was involved more and placed more policies and regulations, it would be more successful. From Porter’s article, “Redefining Competition in Health Care,” he articulates that the “U.S. Health Care System has been poorly in both costs and quality over many years” (Porter, 2008). This topic is highly debatable within different parties. Many are for it, while others are against it. Profit margins for many insurance companies are a major reason whether Obama care will succeed or fail. Insurance companies want to make profits, but it is difficult to do so with Obama care. I am not an expert on this topic and this topic is extremely complex. My perception towards this issue is that in order for Obama care to succeed, it needs to be on a single payer system with government involvement. For example, Canada has success in their healthcare because it is based on a single payer system. If the U.S. bases its healthcare like Canada, similar results can be
Chess Chess is one of the oldest games still played today. It began in India probably in the 6th century. This game spread throughout Asia and later into Europe around 900. Chess went through the evolution of different pieces, boards, and rules, and did not settle until the 19th century. When it did stop its evolution, chess was left with chivalric European names for its pieces. At this time, chess, was known all over the world, and people began to play for championships. This game with
Can business strategy be understood as ‘a chess game played in real life’? In this current day and age, with the increasing social trend of global economy as well as the advanced technology and the opening up regimes, the common business operations has been regarded as a common complex chess game practice for the majority of the multinational corporations, especially when penetrating and managing in the international market place. Dixit and Skeath and Reiley (1999, p.135-141.) pointed out that the
Computers and Strategic Games We all know that computers can help a jumbo jet land safely in the worst of weather, aid astronauts in complex maneuvers in space, guide missiles accurately over vast stretches of land, and assist doctors and physicians in creating images of the interior of the human body. We are lucky and pleased that computers can perform these functions for us. But in doing them, computers show no intelligence, but merely carry out lengthy complex calculations while serving as
picture this description, there’s a baseball game going on. Now, if the setting changed and you were now in a silent room, tapping your finger on a desk with a puzzled look on your face, a baseball game doesn’t even cross your mind. That’s because this environment is ideal for chess! The classic game that’s objective is to see who can capture the other team’s game piece called the king. Even though the objectives and environments in baseball and chess appear to be polar opposites, both require a

Argument paper The board game chess is considered a sport, so if chess is a nonphysical activity such as chess is could a sport then why can’t videogames be. That sounds very unfair to me. People say that videogames should not be a sport because it has no physical activity in it, but what they don’t know is how much practice, skill, and strategy needed to be good at a videogame. The bored cChess is not a physical activity but the game is called a sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

It seems since the beginning of time people have been playing the game of chess as a hobby or pastime. There are strict rules to the perplexing game and a considerable amount of thought is put into each move. In recent years it has gained a considerable competitive edge unlike before, as well as the respect to call it a sport by some. Although chess is widely recognized, in the end it is only a game. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a familiar name to many. Soon they are to decide which
Castles and Kings Chess, which is believed to have originated in India, has come a long way since it’s earliest record and perhaps violent history. Since it’s origin, chess has undergone a few changes. One of the biggest changes in chess is the switch from classical openings to a new style referred to as hypermodern openings. Before you can understand this change, you must know about the history, rules, and strategy of chess. There are many theories about the origination of chess. The most popular
theoretical framework. One thing that is quite evident throughout novel Lolita is his affinity for mind games. This novel can be compared to Johan Huizinga’s Homo Luden. An important component in Huzinga’s games is the “tension.” Nabokov uses this component in his writing to keep readers engaged and to challenge them to work their way through the game. Nabokov with his carefully orchestrated games, pays very close attention to how his book is read. He has participated in multiple interviews to talk
Computer Chess History of Computer Chess The time period of 1949 and 1950 is considered to be the birth of computer chess. In 1949, Claude Shannon, an American mathematician, wrote an article titled “Programming a Computer for Playing Chess” (5). The article contained basic principles of programming a computer for playing chess. It described two possible search strategies for a move which circumvented the need to consider all the variations from a particular position. These strategies will be described
Chess Player Most people learn to read before they learn to play chess, but for me chess was the first thing I was introduced to. My father first taught me the basics of chess in my birth place: Massachusetts. Short after my family and I moved to Cary, North Carolina where I live today. Here I would play chess for hours on end with nothing else to worry about. Studying chess, I would hone my skills and travel to tournaments on a regular basis during the weekends. Chess was my life, I would play upwards
Should video games be considered a sport. I think video games should be considered a sport. Some reasons why they should be considered sports are how many people participate in them. Many people don't think that video games should be classified as a sport but I believe differently. In this research paper I will be looking at both sides of the discussion and what makes or determines a sport. I will also be discussing my views and some facts that support my views on whether video games can and should
Throughout human history simulations have been used to mimic real world processes, situations, and environments. Endy and Brent (2001) defines a “simulation as a representation that embodies information contained in a model, and that provides access to the model by allowing computation of system behavior” (p. 391). Hence the definition, a simulation is a representative environment that has to be realistic enough to produce realistic results. This research paper intends to explore the use, validity
Lindo is very proud of her daughter’s success in the game of chess and like many mothers, she wants to show her daughter off. While Lindo thinks it is glorious, Waverly is quite the opposite. She recalls, “One day after we left a shop I said under my breath, ‘I wish you wouldn’t do that, telling everybody I’m
