If anyone desires to be in a leadership position, one must learn to be strategic in his or her leadership style. In doing so, they will learn how to effectively lead in the current situation they find themselves in. In the infant stages of any leadership position, one must first learn what strategic leadership encompasses, and how they can effectively contribute strategic leading and planning into their current situation. Always understanding where they are and where they want to be is key to being an effective leader. Strategic leadership is a leadership process that uses certain tactics that help increase the communication of vision for the organization. It manages and motivates those in the organization to share in that same vision. To me strategic leadership also is an important tool to aid in implementing change that is needed to move a church or organization forward.
Strategic leadership is important because without strategic leadership, there is an absence of strategic planning, which is needed in order to be effective. Malphurs sates, “One reason for strategic planning is that it really makes a difference in a church’s effectiveness.” In leadership, it is vital to have a plan because without a plan, there can be no goals and without both your work amounts to nothing. There has to be a plan. The saying, “plan your work and work your plan,” is key to succeeding in leadership. Without a plan it is easier to fail. It is a catchall phrase and a very popular topic especially among churches. Leaders in the church must be strategic in leadership roles as well as the planning process. If people see that the ship is being steered in multiple directions with no clear-cut path, there is a good chance they will get off the boat.
Competency as a leader, knowing the direction and plan to get everyone there safely and reach the goals set out to reach as an organization, church or ministry is part of the strategic process and helps define what strategic leadership is. As Malphurs states, "The key to strategic planning is competent strategic leadership.” You may develop the finest strategic plan in the history of the church. It may be featured in the major journals on leadership. You might publish it in a book that sells thousands of copies. However, it will not happen without competent, gifted leadership."
