Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde concentrates on John Utterson, a lawyer and friend of Dr. Jekyll. The novel starts with John Utterson talking with his other friend, who has just witnessed something very weird. A man named Edward Hyde ran over a girl, only to pay off her family later with a check from Dr. Jekyll. The situation is made even weirder because Mr. Jekyll’s will has recently been changed. So now that Mr. Hyde now stands to take everything that had belonged to him. John, believed that the two men are different people, he thinks that the cruel Mr. Hyde is blackmailing Dr. Jekyll without knowing how he’s doing it. John then starts to ask questions too Dr. Jekyll about Hyde. Jekyll basically tells him that it isn’t any of his business and doesn’t concern him. Hyde had attacked someone else. He basically beat a man to death with only using a cane as a weapon. The police thought that John might have something to do with it because he had known the victim. John then took the policeman to Mr. Hyde's apartment, where they found the cane used to kill this man witch ironically john had given to him as a present. John then starts to question Dr. Jekyll about Mr. Hyde again, but Jekyll wouldn’t say anything other than, that Mr. Hyde has run away. He showed John a goodbye note from Mr. Hyde, but supposedly the handwriting was very similar to Dr. Jekyll’s handwriting. After a while things seem to have gotten better than they were for supposedly Mr. Hyde had left a while ago. Mr. Hyde does not reappear, and Dr. Jekyll seems to be happier. Then all of the sudden one of John's friends dies. As the man is dying he gives john a letter and told him that it should only be opened if Dr. Jekyll either dies or mysteriously disappears.
