Stossel Opinion Essay In the video, Stossel talks about how activists and other people have started wearing Che Guevara as a symbol of their protests. The Che Guevara clothing has also become a “cool” thing to wear. Stossel talks about his opinion on the matter, saying that he doesn’t agree with it and it isn’t cool. He says that Americans shouldn’t wear Guevara because he didn’t support things the American people supposedly believe in such as free press. I agree with Stossel because those people shouldn’t be wearing something that they don’t know very much about. Che Guevara was born in Argentina and originally wanted to be a doctor. After going through college, he travelled to help people but the things he saw swayed his beliefs about the world and politics. He quit medicine, thinking that revolution was the only way to obtain justice, and later met Fidel Castro in Mexico. He …show more content…

Someone then turned the photo into a t-shirt design and it mostly became popular for the same reason that people adorn bands that they don’t listen to. It became known as ‘terrorist chic.’ Like the producer of Chevolution says, “We live in a culture today where understanding symbols doesn’t necessarily matter.” The image has also become associated with being a rebel. The reason why activists and unions use Guevara as a symbol is because, as the lady from the teachers union said, “. . . he’s a good role model for all of us, in terms of standing for the people. . .” Che Guevara is not an appropriate symbol for people to be wearing. Whether they’re wearing his picture to show that they are supporting something and they believe he is a good role model for it, or if they know nothing about him, people still shouldn’t wear his picture.
