From powerless to free Mrs. Mallard a new widow has rediscovered her independence. In the moment of the news about her husband’s death, she becomes inflicted with several emotions. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, we can conquer that Mrs. Mallard struggled with her independence but the feeling of something beginning to possess her leads us to believe her husband’s death brings her a sense of relief. Although the emphasis seems to be on how weak and heart broken she is, a closer look at Mrs. Mallards excitement of being a goddess of victory portrays that she has conquered finding her freedom. Kate Chopin’s use of opposition applies a sense of independence and dependence suggesting that Mrs. Mallard is relieved about the death of her husband. When Mrs. Mallard finds herself alone she feels the words “free, free, free” (Chopin 14) slip from her lips. “ She did not stop to ask if it were or were not a monstrous joy that held her” (Chopin 14). The situation can determine what kind or how much of love you feel. Although Kate Chopin is not specific as to the problems between Mrs. Mallard and her husband, she felt relief and determined she would benefit from his death. “ And yet she had loved him – sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in face of this possession of self-assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!” (Chopin 14). This quotation demonstrates that Mrs. Mallard’s self- assertion is the reason she is alive now. This goes to show that Mrs. Mallards new found freedom has reassured her self-confidence.
