The Story of an Hour
"The Story of an Hour" is a short story written by Kate Chopin on April 19, 1894, and originally published in Vogue magazine on December 6, 1894 under the title "The Dream of an Hour." It was first reprinted in St. Louis Life on January 5, 1895 as “The Story of an Hour.” This short story revolves around Louise, wife of Brently Mallard. Because of her heart trouble, Josephine, her sister, and Richards, her husband’s friend carefully inform Louise the news about her husband’s death. When she learns it, she locks herself in her room to immediately mourn the loss of her husband. Alone by herself in the room, she begins to feel an unexpected sense of exhilaration because she realizes that the death of her husband set her free. However, her husband did not die and he comes back home. As soon as Louise sees her husband, she dies of heart disease-joy of kill, which is confirmed by the doctor. While I was reading this story, I realized that people sometime don’t know exactly what they are feeling and they are quite unable to control it. Their feeling can change totally from sadness to happiness and back to sadness in a short time as it did in this story through the main character Louise.

I was carried along with Louise’s mood and its change throughout the story. In the real life, as in “The Story of an Hour,” I’m sure that a lot of people have experienced the situation that they are unable to control their feelings and it leads to their feelings changing in the ways they cannot predict. Releasing the feeling without control can cause some consequence. Louise’s death is the proof of being unable to control the emotion. Although the ending of this story makes me very sad, I enjoyed reading this short story because its situation changes constantly that brings me from surprise to surprise, something that I have rarely found from another
