Processed foods are everywhere; they are fast, convenient and cheap, consequently; they come at a cost to our health. Eating processed foods that contain amounts high fructose corn syrup, sodium-containing additives, trans fats (or trans fatty acids), synthetic dyes, and/or preservatives in our diet regularly is unhealthy and may cause many health problems such as; obesity, organ failure, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tumors. The majority of people that are eating a large amount of fast food on a regular basis may not be aware of what ingredients are actually in the food they are consuming. People may be completely unaware that there are many unhealthy added ingredients to food which are used to preserve, add flavor, texture and colors to the processed foods. Yet we continue to eat food that we have no idea what it really is. Fast foods primarily consist of processed foods. The processing of food can remove nutrients and fiber, which leaves low nutrient value and empty calories. There are many controversial food additives in processed foods. For the most part, a high percentage of processed foods contain these ingredients; if not all of them. Eating large amounts of processed foods containing these ingredients has been known to trigger many health concerns and as society we really need to stop this fast food trend. As a consumer we may assume that unhealthy or unsafe food could not be sold to us but the food is sold every day. Restaurants are not required to disclose all the ingredients in their foods or drinks. Some ingredients people eat or drink are considered safe when consumed in small quantities; or considered safer for one specific age group rather than the next. The processed food we eat has many chemical additives that mislead our scenes, which are actually mascaraing the manufacturing process of the food industry. Eric Schlosser does an excellent job proving this fact in his report “Food Product Design”. His arguments point out that fast food industries main goal is to entice you with a brand of flavor that you eventually will be addicted to. Subsequently over the last fifty years the flavor industry has manipulated the population into spending 90 percent of the money that they spend on groceries, to ensure they are buying branded processed food. In effect these corporations are employing scientific research and a human beings natural instincts and scenes to persuade us into eating their certain brand of food.
The book Salt, Sugar, and Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us discusses the danger of food with its readers. The dangers of food discussed in the book are the ingredients of Salt, Sugar and Fat in the food individuals consume on a daily basis. Producers use these ingredients to their advantage to get the consumers bliss point. The bliss point attained is used by the food giants to achieve a profit. However due to research on the health risks of these ingredients food companies are strategizing in order to maintain their profit and earn more of a profit.
Obesity can be caused by a combination of fast food and the environment people live in today. Fast food contains foods that are high in fats, sugars, and starches. These ingredients have rarely any nutritional value to the human body. Most of the foods available at fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, and KFC contain concentrated salt and preservatives to enhance the flavor in them. Obesity has become the defining aspect of our nation by surrounding the people with fast food products. The freedom to choose what one wants, gives the fast food companies the right to give one unhealthy food. The consumption of fast food products regularly greatly increases one’s chance of having health disparities such as Coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers, stroke, Hypertension, and Osteoarthritis. These negative effects are present with the daily eating of fast foods.
Fast food chains, the main problem responsible for multiple health problems around the world has still not changed any of their ingredients or additives to make a positive change. Fast food meals have been linked to multiple health problems. Such health problems like heart diseases, which is the leading cause of death of men and woman in the United States. Fast food has also been linked to obesity, due to the high amount of fat and carbohydrates found in their meals. An equivalent aspect is the additives added to fast food like trans-fat and sodium, which are both linked to leading to multiple health problems. Yet fast food chains have not done anything in regards to all of this health problems. Fast food chains are still harming the public
In American society’s everyday busy life, fast food is a commonly consumed meal . You can drive down a single road and often find more than five fast food chains’ restaurants. In a society where people are always “on the go,” a cheeseburger meal with a large soda is very easy to grab, and inexpensive. Although people might think it’s just a hamburger and fries, do they really know what is in the food, and how it is going to affect their bodies. Fast food has become a dangerous billion dollar industry, and it is harmful for the consumers. Those who know the dangers need to inform the others that they are taking a risk by pulling into that drive through, and putting their health on the line. Fast food is harmful for an individual’s health
To begin with, according to Pollan consumption of highly processed food is very high in America. Pollan says, “They [processed foods] contain much less water, fiber and micronutrients, and generally much more sugar and fat”(12). Pollan believes the American population does not consume enough real food; therefore, they constantly look for something to satisfy their hunger. Fiber and micronutrients in whole foods give people satisfaction after consuming them. Processed foods are significantly low in micronutrients and fiber. People do not feel satisfied after eating processed foods; consequently, they overeat the foods that negatively impact their health. Processed foods in America are sold at a minimum price, making it easier and more accessible to consume foods that are dangerous to the human’s health.
Fast food offers greater convenience, monetary value, and variety when compared to slow food. Firstly, convenience: Fast food is readily consumable as an alternative to a freshly cooked meal. However, convenience in food products cannot be obtained without copious amounts of additives designed to deliver the illusion of freshness. Therefore, foods produced with convenience in mind is detrimental to consumer health, due to processed, chemically enhanced ingredients, giving the impression the affordable, pre-prepared consumable is a healthy somewhat nutritious meal.
David Zinczenko makes a compelling argument regarding the issues of the fast food industry causing the life sentence of obesity for children. Perhaps, the arguments provided in his essay could have been well founded in 2003, however over a decade has passed, the industry has changed, and such arguments no longer hold ground. I will argue that in 2015, the responsibility of monitoring the problems which arise from fast food consumption now lies in the hand of the "Eater," not those who dish it out.
But too much of anything will cause a problem. Fast food is highly processed and high in calories, which offer no nutritional value. Eating foods that are high in sugar, fat and sodium can cause numerous health issues. The digestive and cardiovascular systems are affected due to the sugar (glucose) found in most fast-food. Your pancreas job is to release insulin into the body, so elevated levels of sugar will alter normal insulin levels resulting in type 2 diabetes. According to an article published on healthline.com suggests that children that eat fast food at least three times a week are at increased rates of asthma and rhinitis. Meals high in carbs, sugar and sodium may increase your risk of developing acne, cavities and osteoporosis (thin fragile
Daily, millions of people are perusing the grocery store, buying food for their families, completely unaware of what they are purchasing. A study on consumer research regarding food labels by the FDA found only a small percentage of people actually read the food labels and understand what they mean apart from only the calories and fat; ingredients are another story. “According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, about 61.5 percent reported using the nutrition facts panel when deciding to purchase food. Fewer people paid attention to the list of ingredients” (CNN Health). The FDA is aware that labeling could help reverse the acceleration we are seeing in heart diseases and obesity, but labeling does not help people to read the ingredients if they do not understand pseudonyms, and vitamins. “The surveys also revealed frequent misunderstanding of the meaning of the daily/value column that shows how each nutrient fits into a healthy diet, “(American journal Nutrition, WEB). Many different harmful ingredients are secretly hidden in labels and people skimming ov...
Scientists claim that the consumption of fast food leads to rapid weight gain, heart attacks, diabetes, reduced immunity, irreversible changes in the liver, raising the level of cholesterol in the blood. The fat contained in fast food, mainly consists of saturated fatty acids, which are deposited on the walls of blood vessels.
The additives and preservatives replace all the nutritional aspects in the food. Some of the food may taste great but lacks nutrition to maintain a healthy body and fast foods also may increase improper digestion. The ingredients found in processed foods are unfamiliar to the body. Our bodies store almost everything the digestive organs cannot process and turns this into fat tissue. Scientists believe this process may contribute to the development of obesity .
The people who are related to cooking and healthy dieting point at the fact that the unhealthy food is a “number one cause of the most common diseases, including cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and heart disease” (Maffetone). Among the food that contains immense amounts of sugar are cakes, ice-creams, and biscuits that are highly loved especially by children. They can easily become a reason for becoming fat and gaining overweight. The same situation is with the high content of salt in the junk food which might result in high blood pressure, and can consequently lead even to strokes and heart attacks. Ready-made food might also contain the substances like preservatives or taste enhancers that contribute to the taste and increase the expiration date. Nevertheless, as Jamie Oliver emphasized the commonly known fact, “diet-related disease is the biggest killer in the United States, right now, here today” (Oliver). The consumption of incorrectly balanced food results in severe outcomes for our health system, and those changes tend to be irreversible as well as the diseases are hard to
People in modern times tend to consume more oily, fattening, and overly processed foods compared to whole, natural, “organic” products. Not only are people eating more overly processed foods, but they are left dealing with the consequences that come with it.
