Stone Carving Stone carving is an ancient process that has evolved over time. There is a specific set of skills needed on order to become a successful stone carving artist, however anyone can obtain this set of skills through much practice and a basic understanding of the principals of art and design. Stone as a material can be very diverse and to learn the technique the artist first must know the media they will be working with. After learning the media an artist must know the technique, the process, the tools needed, and the limitations of the material. The first of which is an Indiana artist named Amy Brier. She has many different workplace all over the country such as, The Human Brain, globegoyle, labyrinth, and cylinder seal (Brier). A large majority of her pieces are interactive pieces in which the must roll the stone in sand to see the pattern the stone leave. This allows for the viewer to get involved and create a different effect every time. Michael Binkley is another successful stone carving artist who has made Breadfruit leaf, barn owl, lady bertha, and vortex (Home). Binkley uses stone for most of his artwork and combines a lot of natural element with stone. By choosing stone he is able to connect the natural elements with a natual earth medium. The next artist is Tanya Preminger who has many successful work outside of stone carving but also has many successful piece made through stone carving like Shield, Cup, Five, and The Tension Field (Tanya). Preminger has large stone works all over the world, she connects her pieces by using the same stone for all her pieces. Stone is very durable and can withstand the elements in which all her works are place. Barbara Hepworth is an older stone carving artist who has many successful abstract pieces. She uses stone to create all of her different abstract works such as Pierced Form, Mother and child, Small one, two, three, and Sleeping Form (Barbara). Stone allows her to create many different form with a smooth texture. Lastly, Donald Davis a stone carving artist has many successful works like Petals, Rotations, Keyway, and Grow (Donald). Davis uses multiple types of stones throughout his pieces this allows for verity in all his different works and keeps the viewers interest. I am a pottery maker for the king of Crete. I create very elaborate pottery for the king. Two of the types of pottery are known as Kamares ware and Marine Style. These two types of pottery are some of the best pottery that has ever been made in our time. Our pottery is created with a flowing, naturalistic shape and design. We pottery makers put images of animals, sea and plant life on our pottery.

Unlike the La Jolla Project, Stonehenge was probably not an abstract sculptural installation made of polished granite blocks. When we hear the word “Art” certain images come to mind. We think of great masterpieces of epic battles, and cathedral walls depicting angels and demons. This however, is a very small part of the art of the world. One form of artwork has been seen in every civilization, on every continent; Folk art. Folk art at its root is art including paintings, textiles, furniture, and carvings done by a country's indigenous people. These pieces are often functional, and serve a purpose on top of being aesthetically pleasing.The techniques used by these people are often passed down generation to generation, and originate in the community itself. This means most of the artisans do not have any formal training in their craft. Many took apprenticeships, or learned from watching village elders.

Those who made Stonehenge succeeded in creating an incredibly complex and mysterious structure that lived on long after its creators were dead. The many aspects of Stonehenge and the processes by which it was built reveal much about the intelligence and sophistication of the civilizations that designed and built the monument, despite the fact that it is difficult to find out who exactly these people were. They have left very little evidence behind with which we could get a better idea of their everyday lives, their culture, their surroundings, and their affairs with other peoples. The technology and wisdom that are inevitably required in constructing such a monument show that these prehistoric peoples had had more expertise than expected.

Donald Judd was an American artist central in the development of a movement beginning in 1963 labeled Minimalism, a term and concept, he profusely detested and rejected. His contribution to the progress of art as a whole through challenging European artistic conventions was immense, as a result he revolutionised practices and attitudes surrounding art making and the exhibition of art. After his abandonment of painting in the 1960’s, he progressed to working three-dimensionally producing simple, often repeated forms, with an intrinsic focus on the use of space. In his eyes, he was reducing painting and sculpture to its basic elements through the use of simple forms, industrial materials, solid colour on flat surfaces, and natural light. However he refused for his work to be classed as sculpture, insisting on the term ‘specific objects’, highlighting its distance from previous notions of art-making in sculpture. These were "specific" due to their carefully orchestrated shape, scale, proportions, and materiality. And they were "objects" because rather than being sculpted, they were fabricated by the artist.
