Stone Carving Stone carving is an ancient process that has evolved over time. There is a specific set of skills needed on order to become a successful stone carving artist, however anyone can obtain this set of skills through much practice and a basic understanding of the principals of art and design. Stone as a material can be very diverse and to learn the technique the artist first must know the media they will be working with. After learning the media an artist must know the technique, the process, the tools needed, and the limitations of the material. The first of which is an Indiana artist named Amy Brier. She has many different workplace all over the country such as, The Human Brain, globegoyle, labyrinth, and cylinder seal (Brier). A large majority of her pieces are interactive pieces in which the must roll the stone in sand to see the pattern the stone leave. This allows for the viewer to get involved and create a different effect every time. Michael Binkley is another successful stone carving artist who has made Breadfruit leaf, barn owl, lady bertha, and vortex (Home). Binkley uses stone for most of his artwork and combines a lot of natural element with stone. By choosing stone he is able to connect the natural elements with a natual earth medium. The next artist is Tanya Preminger who has many successful work outside of stone carving but also has many successful piece made through stone carving like Shield, Cup, Five, and The Tension Field (Tanya). Preminger has large stone works all over the world, she connects her pieces by using the same stone for all her pieces. Stone is very durable and can withstand the elements in which all her works are place. Barbara Hepworth is an older stone carving artist who has many successful abstract pieces. She uses stone to create all of her different abstract works such as Pierced Form, Mother and child, Small one, two, three, and Sleeping Form (Barbara). Stone allows her to create many different form with a smooth texture. Lastly, Donald Davis a stone carving artist has many successful works like Petals, Rotations, Keyway, and Grow (Donald). Davis uses multiple types of stones throughout his pieces this allows for verity in all his different works and keeps the viewers interest.
