The curtains draw open to the sound of the audience. Endless nights and countless hours have been contributed to ensure the success of a meticulously perfected performance. Soon, the spotlight shines among the leading cast, but the workers behind the scenes are left in the dark. Without the notable workers, ‘’The Stock Character Dating Game Show’’ cannot go on. Ideas in my brain began frantically flowing out in excitement, and the classroom was fluttering with discussion coming from every corner of the room. As a group, we had many ups and downs. Through many past experiences, working with people can be strenuous and draining, and this time was no different. With the deadline making its approach, time outside of our busy days had to be improvised to enhance and build on the script. Together, we promised to get online and work through the script together, but people would get on too late when the work was near done. At times, people would get distracted, leaving work unfinished. As a result, other members did more work than they were initially supposed to do. In addition, a member did not have internet, so it increased the difficulty to work as a team. When a member isn’t present, I am unable to guarantee that their work would get done. In general, no arguing transpired, but it felt like we were on pins and needles when new tasks had to be fulfilled. Besides the script, wardrobe and memorization had to be dwelled upon as they played just as an important role to immerge us into character. There are many elements that help build a drama into an interesting, audience captivating piece of performance. By employing elements of drama such as voice, movement, focus, tension, situation, role, character, language and audience (Dinham, 2014), participants can create entertaining drama for their audience. In the television movie, ‘Famous Five on a Treasure Island’ (Johnson, 2012), the show’s creator has included many of the elements that are necessary for enjoyable viewing. In the following writing I will discuss three of the elements that are included in the show: tension; role, character and relationships; and situation.
Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is a comedy that has been interpreted in different ways, enabling one to receive multiple experiences of the same story. Due to the content and themes of the play, it can be creatively challenging to producers and their casting strategies. Instead of being a hindrance, I find the ability for one to experiment exciting as people try to discover strategies that best represent entertainment for the audience, as well as the best ways to interpret Shakespeare’s work.
However, my friend and I were playing roles to break the ice between the team. After our first meeting outside of the classroom, I found out that my group was friendlier as we started getting more comfortable with our team members. The first issue we encountered was how we should communicate to do the work. I was the person who created a group on WhatsApp and Skype in order to make the group communication more effective. The second issue we faced as a group was that we seemed to be stuck in the brainstorming stage. I could say that we spent more than two weeks in that stage just because there were lot of disagreements between team members on how we should be conducting our project. Each one had different idea and point of view. The first assignment required the group to work together to produce an interview type scenario for someone applying to become a learning mentor, this meant everyone had to work together as an equal part of the team with the aim of producing a high quality piece of work. This however was more difficult than it first appeared, with contact being limited and members of the group arriving to meetings late, this may have been because no one individual was set a specific role except for the final interview, this meant there was no ‘gate-keeping’ meaning no one was ensuring everyone was participating equally, meaning many people were promising to produce information and not providing it, this among other things includes myself (Jaques, 2008). Due to the difficulty with contact, organising time to meet and produce our work became a difficulty, so when we finally started meeting regularly there was a strong sense of urgency due to the limited face to face time we had, affecting our work as result, if we had started meeting sooner we may have found it easier and less stressful researching and producing the results. Another issue with contact was the online forum that was put in place to show our work, though this helped a little with archiving information, it did cast an unreliable balance on what was happening, the consensus on the forum by some was it was very easy to be portrayed as not participating enough, regardless of the input on the final product. It was a very bad situation that we could never pull ourselves out of. Unfortunately we didn’t have anybody like Kathryn Peterson from Decision Tech to help change the team’s overall behavior. We didn’t communicate with each other effectively, or fully trusted each other. Some of the team didn’t hold other members accountable for their actions. Other members didn’t show vulnerability but they did display anger during meetings. Several of the team members only looked out for self. They didn’t want to work on committees because they wanted to complete tasks their way and not by committee decision. We displayed each level of the five dysfunctions. When I was little I loved Dexter’s laboratory and I swore I was going to be a scientist, I loved movies and swore I was going to be an actress, I played basketball and swore I’d be in the WNBA someday getting buckets and hearing wild fans cheer my name. I had a lot of goals when I was little but when I got to high school I realized what I wanted to do with my life. Reading was always a hobby of mine, but in high school I finally took up writing—poetry at first, as an outlet for my teen angst, and then I realized that through writing I could become anything I want. I could become a scientist, an actress, an athlete, anything I wanted to be— all I had to do was think of a story and then write it. I feel in love with the fact that I could create worlds and have adventures just by thinking it up and writing it down.
The worst team experience here was in my physics class. We had about a month to put together a small project, and roughly a week in I started trying to send messages to the other members of the team. They never replied. Emails were ignored, elms messages never got a response, and we had a groupme where the only 7 messages were mine. A week before the project was due I went to the professor, and was told to keep trying. That most students wait a long time before starting. They never responded, two nights before it was due I completed it without telling anyone. The day we were supposed to present the topic I was outside the class two hours early rehearsing, memorizing, and calming my nerves.
Starting the group out in the beginning of the semester, five of us were set into a group to get to know one another and to work cohesively throughout the semester. Matt, Shemron, Sam, and Giselle, and I all gathered around and introduced ourselves. We started off exchanging numbers and emails and some background information about each other. A group is composed of members each with different backgrounds this includes major, culture, and personalities. We were a heterogeneous group. We each have strengths and weaknesses different from each other. Getting to know one another I the first week was critical for us to brainstorm and evaluate places we wanted to volunteer at. One of the first clinches I think as a group that was minor, but one of our members didn’t want to work with kids. This took our first option off the list of options because we wanted everyone to be interested in the work we were going to be doing for a whole semester. We handled this perfectly taking his feelings into consideration and pushing through brainstorming, but making sure not to groupthink and even coming up with a lists individually before talking as a group. By doing this we successfully and I think with in the first week decided and contacted Loraine’s Soup Kitchen as our volunteer experience.
I’m tired, a little stressed and disappointed with some of the group members this week. This has been the most challenging time in group so far. Everything is usually fine, but something is off this week. Although, we have group chats, our group cohesion is off. After, deciding to do the outline one way, we ended up doing it another way. That was cool until individuals brought the confusion. One person thought this way, the other thought that way. It was a mess. Our group dynamics were all over the place. The impact this had on me was very negative. With your help Mrs. Evans, we eventually decided to keep the outline simple. The other group members picked their duties, while mine were assigned to me. It did not bother me that I was assigned duties. Actually, my absence from the meeting helped to decide what I was to do. When it comes to the norming and forming of this group, I find myself at a loss for words. The norming process is off. There is less cohesion than usual; we have not been as effect this week. Also, relationships do not seem to be strengthening. This makes me angry because it affects us all. Unlike the norming stage, the forming stage is pretty solid. All of us are comfortable (in my opinion) giving our opinions, and we understand what is required of us. There is no need to form rules they are already in place. In my opinion, some of the members did not follow the rules. I for one broke a rule.
I believe that we worked so much better in the first group project we had because we all started slacking in this project and didn 't get to work on the project in a timely manner. I know time management is hard, and we where able to find a way through it in the first project, but in this second group project the slackers in the group started to show and failed to meet my group expectations. In this group project there was an uneven distribution of workload and certain individual behaviors that brought out group moral down affecting our success. There was no time for all of us to meet up at once and get the work done that really affected the communication climate because of the lack of support and engagement by group members. Our group’s climate has always been good since we started to be a group in the begging of the class but a we got into our second project it started to get tense in our group climate. I have to admit Daniel is a very hard worker and he was the one to get most of the work done and I felt as if we were unfair to him by noting in a a lot of work not this project. He would always attend group meeting since we started this group since he wanted to screed in the class. Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
This group was formed to achieve specific goals for a bigger task. Our group has members with diverse backgrounds which allows a wide variety of ideas to be stimulated during discussion. Going in with an open mind I understood anything could happen, but our group meshed amazingly. Everyone has participated evenly and helped out when needed. After talking about personal strengths and weaknesses each member then better understood each other. Jordan, Kieante, Madison and I all preferred to do work at the last minute because we work more efficiently. While Tyler, Sarina and Yahaira like to worked early and ahead. As a group we decided to get everything done early. Knowing all the members strengths and weaknesses, they have not changed any of my decisions, but may as we get later in the 5k preparation process.
Our team members have conflict schedule, especially the final exams were coming. Therefore, to manage a suitable time for each group member is not easy, so I decided to hold out meeting time at night and finished the whole discussion within an hour. The other challenges I faced was the collaboration of team project. Each group member had different ideas and various writing styles. Therefore, it was hard for me to compose everything together in one similar tone. Also, I had to delete some ideas from group members in order to make the paper well organized. We made sure that we were all on task and had enough time to finish. There is one student in our group who went beyond their assigned task to really help our group. She, Hannah Turner, really helped our group. She could take what we wanted to say and put it in words we would have never dreamed of writing. Hannah did such an amazing job that I believe she deserves more credit than any other student in our group. We did not have any total slackers in our group, but there was a student that did not live up to their task. We all communicated via text message. In one instance, we were talking about the rough draft and which paragraphs we would write, and one student said “what are we suppose to be doing again?”. Hannah, once again, did his work. She nor I wanted a bad grade so we picked up his
I have lots on my mind yet I still move towards my goal for the day. I arrive at the classroom, take off my winter coat and set out to make a difference. The many colorful faces are eager to see me. I feel a dozen little arms around me and even more grins thrown my way. Did I say I had a lot on my mind? At this moment all has been forgotten and the only importance seems to be in the questions and laughter that I am surrounded by.
