Poetry Research Project Maya Angelou was a poet and award-winning author, that earned numerous achievements throughout her lifetime. From award winning literature to Broadway, Angelou was an inspiration to many. Her book And Still i Rise, is said to be the most documented biography of poems about her, with her poem Still I Rise revealed to have her own personal experience of triumphs to overcome difficult obstacles. Angelou influenced the poem Still I Rise with her life by the African-American culture, traumatic events, talents, that created a deeper meaning of determination.
Marguerite Annie Johnson or Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 4, 1928. As a child Angelou parents separated and she lived with her mother and brother in Stamps, Arkansas where she received racial discrimination. Later in life, she had a son in school and wed a Greek sailor. After that she traveled the world doing broadway and musical productions. Then she responds to them by showing what all she's capable of “That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs” and “‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room” (Poemhuneter.com). She has been dancing all her life so she knows what she is doing and she knows that her walk is unique to her.
