Evander Holyfield said, “Well, when I think of steroids I think of an image. You have the advantage over someone, which is a form of cheating. I guess it would not be right unless it was legal for everybody. Reason it is not legal for everybody is because it can hurt people seriously”. I really agree with this. Most athletes want to be the best at their sport and performance enhancing drugs allow some to do that, but not without a risk. Performance enhancing drugs have serious health risks and consequences to those who use them. Besides the health problems that come with using performance enhancing drugs, they are also a form of cheating. Performance enhancing drugs are also being used by young athletes. With all these issues, performance enhancing drugs need to be banned. Performance enhancing drugs have been around since the early Olympic Games in 776 BC. The Greeks would eat meat and experiment with herbal medicines to help their performance. Around 100 AD the Roman’s would try stimulants and hallucinogens to help keep fatigue away and help prevent injuries. By the late 19th century athletes were drinking wine to help with their performance. But, it was not until 1928 that the first laws against performance enhancing drugs were put into effect. During WWII the Nazis used steroids on the German soldiers to improve their strength. Soldiers also used amphetamines during WWII. This uses of amphetamines in soldiers lead to athletes using them after the war. In 1958 the Federal Drug Association approved the first anabolic steroid to be sold. Dr. John Zieglar created the drug called Dianabol. Dianabol used testosterone to build strength. By the 1960’s athletes started dying because of doping. More than three-quarters of both young males and parents in our survey said that pro athletes using PEDs has put pressure on young athletes to use drugs as well” (Newswire). Performance enhancing drugs do have their benefits, but they also have extreme downsides and consequences. These drugs need to be banned for the safety of athletes young and old.
