People generally know that Racism means a discrimination based on race. Oxford English Dictionary defines Racism as “The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” (“Racism”) Most of the definition in dictionary do not include the power of majority to maintain their advantages through systematic discriminatory acts in the society. The power of whites has been continued and grow upon the non-whites throughout the history of U.S. "Be... ... middle of paper ... ...e different. By including white privilege in the definition of Racism, Whites will try to stop use their privilege not to be ignorant and decide to look clearly. In this way, social change in racial inequality will be improved.
When looking back at our country during the civil rights movement, many people are appalled at how people of color were being mistreated and hated for so long. In our society, today, people like to pride themselves in not being racist and being accepting of all different races and cultures. Although people like to think that they are not racist and that our society is entering a “post-racial” phase, the truth is that we are all somewhat subconsciously racist and to think that we will ever become a post-racial society is unrealistic. People may not believe that white privilege is a real issue but the truth is that it is real and it is happening in our country more than ever. Sadly, race still plays a huge and important role on how you are treated and looked at in this country, there are still people in our society who treat others differently simply because of how they look and because of the color of their skin.
Most of the white males were prejudice. So, no matter what the evidence would say, the prejudice would take over and the thought that “all blacks are bad” would come in to play in the verdict. It would almost be dishonorable for a white man to not vote a black man guilty, no matter what the evidence poin... ... middle of paper ... ... Herbert. Vol. 2.
The people who notice these prerogative are majority people who are colored as they feel excluded regardless how “diverse” society claims to be. In the article “The Legal Alchemy of White Domination: Embedding White Logic in Equal Protection Law” by Wendy Leo Moore, examines how white privilege structures deep racial inequality for citizens in America (Moore, 2014). The effects of privilege in our society are by the way we can view the effects of privilege in our society is through the occurrence and universality of racial discrimination. “Privilege” majority of the time creates societal inequalities, leading to social stratification. As we explored in class about white privilege we looked at “White Privilege in El Barrio” where we learned about how many people who
In fact, where Malcolm underestimated the goodness in whites, King seems to have overestimated it. He talks about his overestimating of goodness in "Letter from Birmingham Jail." "I guess I should have realized that few members of a race that has oppressed another race can understand...the deep groans and passionate yearnings of those that have been oppressed" (244).... ... middle of paper ... ... Malcolm X and Martin Luther King were fighting for the same cause, racism. Although their views on white Americans, which affected their methods of approach, were originally different, both activists came to realize that not all whites can be classified as good or bad. They began to see that, instead of discouraging whites from helping, they could use eager whites to create more of an impact within the white communities.
Is this not racism? The very racism King fought against? If we are all to be treated equally, as stated by our own government, then why is our government promoting the defiance of this very law? Colleges all across our country are responsible for practicing reversed racism. Because of their desire to accept students within a minority, they are in fact excluding many more qualified white students from their education services.
Though history has portrayed him favorably, the fact of the matter is that Malcolm X though black people were better than white people, which makes him just as bad as any of the people he crusaded against. I would be remiss if I didn’t first clear the air on this one issue: the behavior of white society before the Civil Rights movement in America and around the world was abhorrent. Horrible crimes against humanity were committed throughout colonization, slavery, and the time between the end of the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement. This behavior was disgusting, repugnant, and just wrong and though I don’t know much of my ancestral background, I am ashamed ...
William Apess then asks his mostly white audience to reexamine their Christian values along with their prejudices. His essay acknowledges that unless the discrimination and prejudices that plague the white man over the other races disappear, then there won’t be peace in the Union. The portrayal by Apess of the rampant racism that existed in America in his time is accurate and clear. He understood that the nature of racism is found both in the regular citizen as well in the ruling classes or politicians. As an example, during the time Apess wrote his essay, it interracial marriage was illegal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Hispanics, Asians, and Middle Eastern people, to name a few ethnic groups, are also discriminated against. In his Huffington Post article, “The Real Reason White People Say ‘All Lives Matter,’” John Halstead explains just why white people are uncomfortable with the phrase “Black Lives Matter.” By being a society where being white is the default, white people are immediately thrown on-edge when a specific race or ethnicity is mentioned. The phrase “Black Lives Matter,” causes white people to think that “White Lives Don’t Matter.” However, when the same phrase is mentioned but focused on a different group, such as “Refugee Lives Matter”, a phrase that is gaining in popularity due to the displacement of Syrian people due to war in the country, the same results are seen. By seeing white as the default skin color, we only continue the idea of entrenched racism. Racism is an extremely controversial topic, yet white people question its existence.
The majority in his country are the Whites because of their power not by number. Whites refuse to admit to the racist society we live in and just make excuses or change the topic. If White people actually made their power worthwhile, then they should project anti-racist
