Women In Agriculture

Throughout our nation’s history, women have been looked down upon. Society often tells women that they cannot do all of the things that a man can. Most people have this misconception that women cannot get their hands dirty, guys can do anything better than girls, and that there are certain jobs meant only for men. Stereotypes like these kept women from certain career fields, but, with todays evolving society, women are setting the bar higher for themselves.

The agricultural industry has come a long way since the 18th century. In 2012, there were over 900,000 female farmers in the United States alone; however, as great as that sounds, it was actually a two percent decrease from the amount in 2007. There are more female leaders today than there have ever been before. As a past FFA member, I know from experience that I saw more involvement from girls at every level of competition. My senior year there was only one male on our chapter officer team. Looking back now, it wasn’t just an Anson thing to have female leaders though. As an Area II Officer, six out of nine were female, and girls held two of the top three positions. The National FFA Organization welcomed females in 1969, so it is not really a new idea to have women involved. With that being said, I still feel like women are looked down upon for being involved in the agriculture industry. When I tell people that I am an Ag major, they naturally assume that I grew up with cows and pigs, and that my best friend was my horse. While some of those things are true about me, it is not right that people stereotype women in Ag as these hillbilly
