There are different perspectives on how society chooses to view men and women and it affects how we label them. Stereotypes play a major role in how we act, the way we speak, and they way we hold ourselves. Through our society, the main outlooks that one has on the other gender is based upon standards and how the person attains to them.

Many of society’s standards for men are based on success and unfeeling. They are urged not to contemplate the effects of their actions, and instead they’re told to stop thinking and just persevere. A common term used is “‘Be a man!”’ (Theroux). The statement conveys feelings of heroism and doing whatever it takes to be successful. There’s not one standardized type of women. There many different hair styles, makeup styles, clothing styles, races, and more. On the contrary, men most often, are very similar. Depending on the situation, they have the same style of clothing and accessorizing. This level of basic is labeled as “unmarked” (Tannen). When someone is marked or they have a distinguishing feature, they are perceived in a different manner. The reason why women are labeled as “objects” is because there are more opportunities to express themselves differently. There’s are wider range of styles and accessories made available to them. Meanwhile, there’s a limited number of pant styles and shirts that they can wear. For men there is usually a casual and business look. But for women, there are many different categories of styles. Deborah Tannen states that there is “no unmarked woman” while “male is the unmarked case”. Unmarked and marked people, no matter what gender, are going to appear differently and that is the same with stereotypes. Whether a man or a woman follows stereotypes or not, there is always going to be judgement from the opposite
