Whenever you're watching a movie or a sitcom there always seems to be some form of stereotype incorporated within their concept, it could be either good or bad. The cultures that are associated with this assignment are Latin and Greek American cultures which has four screenings. The four movies include Fools Rush In, The Wedding Planner, Dora the Explorer, which are a part of the Latin American Culture, My Big Fat Greek Wedding which was a part of the Greek American culture. In the movie Fools Rush In, you see a fiery latina played by Salma Hayek who comes from a very religious family, her family is also very big and when they celebrate they go all out just so they can have some fun. It was hard not to think of Jennifer Lopez being anything but being a latina because I listen to her music, watch her movies and her tv show, if I was a person that was not familiar with her background I would not be able to tell. The stereotypes that I noticed in The Wedding Planner was Italians being portrayed as having a large family, and having arranged marriages as seen with Mary’s parents and Mary’s father trying to get her into an arranged marriage with Massimo. Dora the Explorer is a favorite among many young children as they interact with Dora to learn spanish words and phrases. There was an uproar amongst mother’s when Mattel chose to change Dora’s look, which many of the mothers see it as unfit for young viewers as they can be very influential. The last screening was of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the stereotypes that I noticed in this movie was having a big family, arranged marriages, heavy accents and superstition. Toula had a big family with personalities to match while Ian comes from a quiet and reserved family.
